Since Benz started marketing their gwagon here (rather than that guy importing them to NM) they are now listed at $70k, about half the previous price. That's a range rover price now. Hmm. I'm wondering if we will be seeing them around town now, and becomig affordable used in a few years? They weigh 5600 lbs, btw.

I don't understand the attraction to this pimp-mobile. Oh, oh, I get it, "ain't nothing but a G-thang, baaaby!"

Then again, I don't know how capable they are offroad. Anyone know?

I was reading a 1987 'back pages' article in one of the Rover mags about a test drive of the G-thing. They stated how often they kept getting stuck, got several flat tires. They basically gave it a bad rating for offroad capability. Maybe they've improved since?

Please excuse my bad "G" humor. I truly respect other's opinions and tastes (well, mostly anyway).

in stock form they are pretty bad ass. was in one last summer in ireland. an older one, but still a great truck. would whoop up on ANY stock disco anytime with ease.
in pimped out form they are less attractive, but in their basic forms i think are they quite nice.

One of my friends just bought one in Dec. (He's also got a rangie and a D90.) It's pretty damn nice. It kind of reminded me of a hummer in some respects... boxy (moreso than my dicso). It definately is an offroad capable vehicle in stock form.

I think he told me he paid 89k for it... and he has no plans to take it off road. (That's what his Defender is for!)

you can get a nice 80's+ gwagon for around 15K. saw several in europe. not nearly as spiffy as the new ones, but still a very capable truck and you don't have to worry about bashing it on rocks as much.
yeah the one i see in town is always spotless and the yummy mummy driving it looks to be sure of herself that she is the bomb. well maybe she is, but still.

Off the shelve, the G-wagon is probarbly one of the most if not the most capable vehicles. Articulation similar if not beter than a LR product, comes with two real lockers.

If you ever have the chance to have a look at all the under carriage components including the axles, way stronger than any LR product.

I know if LR wanders further down the design path they started with the new Rangie, thats it I am buying a G.
In all my travels through Africa I have yet to see a G broken down on the side of the road. Our sister company in Germany uses them exclusively and swear by them.

Yeah when you look under one of those things, the frame is completely sealed, and has tubular strengthening bars across the bottom welded into the frame rather than the disco's bolt on cross pieces - looks wonderfully strong. But I never been in one so I can't say how well it drives. We need to invite a few g-owners over to dweb (gweb?) and bring them with us on a few trips to see how they bash. They come stock with three lockers!

I was wondering...since Mercedes officially started selling the G500 for $72K last year, wouldn't the prices of like a 1996 model(around $50000-65000 last I checked) go down to ~$30000?

80's models are actually less than 20K. I stumbled on a website before maintained by this guy, kinda like the discoweb of gwagons. This guy even mentioned that he had a D90 that he sold to John Lee. I guess that would be John's milk truck. I guess a g wagon for under 20K is a nice alternative to a used disco. --except of course you wouldn't be surfing discoweb that much anymore.

His new Gwagen is very nice. I looked into getting one about 18 months ago. They are incredibly capable.

Actually, they have less articulation than a Disco. When the Disco came out in the UK many years ago, I read a comparison test between the LR, G-wagon, and Montero. Basically, it said the Disco could go further down the trail with open diffs than the other two vehicles. However, once you locked up the diffs in the G-wagon, it was by far the most competant vehicle (as you would expect). Methinks though that a Disco SII with central lock and truetracs would match the G-wagon for a whole lot less money.

There are other things too, like reliability (i.e. no Lucas) and strength (drive shafts, etc) that make it very attractive, although I'm sure parts are gonna cost a bomb too, just like the disco

How much aftermarket support does the G-wagon have? (lockers, suspension, etc.)

As the posts said above, they have stock lockers front and rear. Cable lockers, I believe, or at least they used to be? May be electronic now...
I've heard their undercarriage is well laid out, with everything tucked up inside the truck, not much to hang up on. I haven't crawled under one, though.
