I am a regular guy, don't really know much about all this, so all this may sound stupid... please bear with me.

It is the 51000mile Disco2, 2 days ago, the "Check engine Soon" light start blinking, non-stop. So I brought it to the dealer and had them check. It is $140 to check up and find out the "#4 cylinda spark plug wire is shorted and need to be replaced. The total bill is $280.

Now, I am thinking, is there a way I can have the OBD2 reading and figure it out myself? Then, buy the wire and either replace it myself and/or find a cheaper shop to replace it? Any comment and suggestion as to how I can save some money? Warranty is over for me so I need to be prepared for future.

Buy an OBD2 reader in Sears (or Pep Boys) - make sure its good for rovers. They range $50-$100 or more. Get the reading, post it here, and someone will tell you what it means or you can look it up online.

My DII check engine light came on at the same milage when I had just left for the east coast. It was running good so I kept going and the light went out after some miles. When I got where I was going I stopped at the dealer to have the regular service performed. I was told that the light comes on to 'remind' us to take it to the dealer for the service. There was nothing out of the ordanary.
Anybody else have this happen?

Ah.. Thanks.. If Autozone can do it for free, then no need to buy a reader.

When the check engine light blink, I do experience power lost.... So I guess it is not just a reminder.

Thanks guys..!

If you already have a laptop, you can get an OBD2 connector and software from http://www.obd-2.com You can download an additional code file at no extra charge that will translate most of the Rover codes so that you can see what the codes mean right on your laptop. It will also allow you to clear the codes and reset the Check Engine light. I have had this software for a couple of years, and I am happy with it.

I got a OBDII reader at Harbor Frieght cost about $50. You can find the codes online or search the old posts here. Buy a new set of plugs and wires and change them yourself. Oh yea the OBDII reader will reset the check engine light as well. If the problem continues the light will just come back on.
