I just had a new front cover installed on my disco and oil change... first I discover that they didn't use the propoer procedure in doing my oil change but now I am getting a loud lifter noise.

Here are the symptoms ... I drove the truck on the highway without incident and no lifter noise...for about 40kms... I get off the highway and start hearing the faint tick of lifters ... it starts getting louder to the point there's no mistaking it. The oil light didn't come on ... i pop the hood and find that the REJECTS at the garage overfilled the truck with oil ... almost two litres too much!!!!!!!!!

The question is can the lifter noise be caused by having too much oil and what kind of damage did I do and what should I be looking for... before I go after the garage! Can the problem be something else... there's a brand new oil pump in it and the fact the oil light's not on would indicate there is pressure ??

When an engine is overfilled with oil the crank will whip it into foam if it is over filled enough. I wouldn't think it would foam up enough to starve the lifters, but it might.
Somebody else will have a better answer, these guys here are good...

first thing I would do is change the oil again

if they did not use the right amount...who says they used the correct oil?

my 94 clacks up a storm on anything other then 15/50 weight

30 weight would cause some clackety clack in a older motor.

I once had a Honda where to much oil was added. I got on the freeway and the oil frothed. Oil pressure did not drop but the engine was not properly lubricated as the pump could not push the froth through the engine.

Your biggest concern will be gaskets. You will likely have failure of the head gaskets much sooner. I wouldn't change a thing tow it to another shop. have them document everything they do for your following lawsuit. Then go to the shop that screwed up and ask them what they are going to do to fix this problem and problems that come up in the future.

Just my 2 cents

It gets worse... believe it or not I just crawled under my truck and found that the shop never bothered to connect my oil pressure switch...so it's possible that I didn't have oil pressure from the garage to my place... some 55kms .... if that's the case I expect I did some serious damage to my motor.

I was under the impression that if the oil pressure switch isn't connected the oil pressure light stays on... mine never came on at all????

I will have it towed to a sop tomrrow and have them fully document the incompetent work done on my truck.

At that point shop would be hit with suit, if it would be in states..

Narinder - seriously, beat them up with sharp pointy stick, they looks fairly incompetent bafoons from what you discovered so far..

I can't express how angry I am. The aftermarket warranty company, lubrico, assured me that this shop had an excellent reputation and experience on exotics, I had no choice but to have the work done by them. They had my truck for over a month to change the front cover a relatively simple job for a shop. Now I find that they put more then 2 litres too much oil in the truck, didn't connect the oil pressure switch and who knows what....now i possibly have a truck with a damaged motor (bearings etc.) and even if I get it repaired now, the motor will never been where it was before... all the regular oil changes etc was wiped out in a 55km trip. To make matters worse now I have to get a lawyer and invest more time in money.

There are exotics in Saint John? Not that I do it very often, but when I had my Disco in Halifax and now my RRC in North Bay, good ole Canadian Tire does just fine with a Rover, especially for the basic stuff like oil changes. All you have to do is get them to realize that its just a basic old truck not a Ferrari. Of course, the best option is to just do the work yourself and screw the monkeys (so to speak).

LR shops are hit and miss everywhere i think. My dealer forgot to reassemble my air intake once, which was the last time i used them. I also had my engine surge in their parking lot after a service, them blame me not knowing where the brake is... dickheads. Basically they are a bunch of incompetent assholes. IF anyone is wondering this was in NJ at land rover Monmouth, do not go there, ever, for anything. on another note though, LR woodbridge seems to be pretty good. as Bill said, do everything you can yourself, but that may void your aftermarket warranty, or travel farther to find a better shop.

Always ALWAYS check your fluids after having it serviced.

Local Honda dealer (which likes to tell me I'm not maintaining my Honda right) gave us back our delSol short about 1.3L of oil ... doesn't sound like a big deal, except those tiny rice burners only hold 3.5L of oil to begin with.

Never trust anyone.
