I'm looking to upgrade my factory radio to the navigation system in the 03 models and wanted to know if anyone has done the same. The LR dealer was no help at all. I'm curious if the wiring plugs are the same or if I have to splice a new plug or harness in.

Just one idea, if you want a navigation system I would look at an after market one. The Discovery one is pretty crappy IMHO. Just an idea, would be cheaper I bet too. I have an aftermarket one and it is great.

The only reason I'm looking at the factory one is so I can have the CD in the dash. I put a really nice Sony CD/mp3 player in but changed my mind because I didn't want to cannibalize my factory equipment. Plus I really like the steering wheel controls. I know there's better but I was kind of hoping for something that works with all the original parts.

CD in the dash would be a nice feature - but, there are advantages to having separate systems. If one goes down, you're covered.

I had the opportunity to test the 03 system in an 03 loaner and I was not pleased with it. The nav system over-rode the sound system which brought delays in start of music playing and also pauses. That annoyed me.

I have the Garmin Street Pilot - pretty happy about it. For me, the best thing about it is it talks and tells where to turn, how far, etc. I don't have to look at it - which leaves me free to drive defensively to protect myself from other drivers looking at their gps units, talking on their cell phones, and screaming at their children.

I wouldn't like to give up music controls on the wheel either - I'm with you on that one!!

I have been told the 04' models have a cd player in the dash. I'm hoping to find one later in the year when others start to upgrade.

I am running Pioneer NAV-SYS910DVD. Gives me flip out touch screen, cd, radio, DVD and NAVI in the dash. Very clean. Navi is very accurate. One map disc is all you need for Continental USA and Canada.

i already checked on this with LR, and the dash frame is different on the 03 compared to the 00, you would have to do serious mods to it, and also, the LR dealer said the nav system is plagued with problems, just not worth it.

just get the alpine dash unit with the flip LCD screen, then get the alpine DVD nav unit, just be prepared for 4k in parts, and an all day install job

Thanks for the help. Maybe I'll just have to go with something aftermarket.

Sam,

I'd second the Pioneer NAV-SYS910DVD nomination. Regarding price, you should check on eBay. There can be some pretty significant savings between the MSLP and some eBay vendors.
