Hello One and All, I have decided to go with a Discovery. I was wondering if people recomend the II or the original? I really like the II's. Also what trim line and year is good? This will be used off-road and I will be slowly modified with the essential componants. Thank You, Daniel |

If you're thinking of going off-road, the D1 offers certain advantages over the D2. Namely, it's shorter so not as much to scrape on the back end, comes with 16" tires already, plus it has a CDL and not as much electronics and more modification friendly. The D2's have better road manners and can still be modified but it's missing the CDL. You can get kits to put it back in for the early D2's but it becomes a bit more difficult (still doable but from what I hear more of a hassle) for the later years. The D1's are also probably a lot cheaper to purchase too. |

Daniel- My first Disco was a 1996 DI SE7 that I put 27,000 miles on in less than 2 years. I loved it to death. Being an SE7 it had rear air conditioning and rear jump seats standard. As a high schooler I loved having those options and being able to carry around tons of friends to games and get-togethers (plus the regular off-road excursion). Unfortunately the Disco was totaled after I was run off the road by another truck one night. I now have a '97 Disco V8i that was the former off-road truck of Land Rover Greensboro and it is definitely a sweet truck. I put jump seats in, but I really miss the rear air though. You will be amazed at what the Disco can do just stock with a set of good mud tires. Hope you find what you're looking for. |

My vote is a series II. The traction control goes a long way in helping off-road especially if you get one of the early DII's with the capability to add CDL. According to our techs you can't add CDL to the 02's or 03's. I really would suggest an 04 for the factory CDL with traction, it's great. But higher in the money obviously. My two cents. |

I second Ho's opinion 100%. The 99 D1 had its s*** together and the 04 finally gets a factory installed CDL. You only pay about $20k more for the HDC, ETC, available rear air suspension (SLS) and slightly larger cargo space. $.03587 Cheers, e |

2001 D2 ex-lease plenty around soon. Early models have the CDL and decent engine. Bigger and more comfy than D1. And its always such fun to kick all the D1's asses off road! But to be fair you will have a rather big ass! |

I agree with Ho and Eric. D1 Vs DII: I drive a DII, but I like to get my hands dirty and screw thi... er modify things. I suppose the DI is more capable out of the box, with a shorter ass and the CDL. I think, however, if you don't mind cutting and retrofitting, the DII can be made into a more capable vehicle than the DI can. It is a lot more expensive though, as many things for the DII end up being custom built, wheres the DI has a large aftermarket supply. Now, my DII has the CDL linkage installed, but that's something I had to do myself, wheres with the DI I wouldn't... OH! To hell with it, I give up. I suppose it ends up even. I couldn't decide between the two myself so I just bloody picked one in hopes that I will own both someday. I still drool over those classic british lines on the DI.
