Hi all ,
02 D2 with low mileage. 16,000 . Had the Check engine light come on twice. First time they replaced some spark plug wires they say shorted.
Now they are doing a valve job. Seems kinda low mileage to be having these types of problems. Anyone else here have this happen. Anything I should be doing to prevent besides premium gas?

Unfortunately, you'll see lots of references to valve jobs on d1's and d2's - though I think yours is the newest I've heard of - no surprise though.

Search and you'll find hundreds of discussions. Good gas, a little top end engine cleaner, and generally driving like you stole it seem to keep the problems down - but not 100%.

Bill thanks for the info. Just thought it was a little early for this sort of thing.

I second all that. ESP the Drive it like you stole it comment. IF you drove them easy they shift so early. Engines NEED to be taken up high in the rev band. For multiple reasons. ONe, it keeps the internals cleaner, burns off excess buildup, two, rings and engine compenents wear different at different RPM, if you never go above 4k RPM and then take it to 4800 passing a semi, thats hard on the rings, etc. Not much mind you, abut if you take two identical new engines, baby one and drive the crap out of the other, the hard driven motor will alsways pull stronger later.
BEWARE< by drive hard I do NOT mean to not change the oil, etc. On the Contrary, I run full synthetics, nice filters, and change oil every 3k to 4k religiously. By drive hard I mean "USE THE POWERBAND". Dont be a Grandma, but DO let the engine warm up fully before abusing it, and do keep up on maintenence and use high quality fuel and oils.

Is BMW still supplying engines for the disco?
Coming from that world I know that BMW engines like to be driven hard.

There are no BMW engines in the Disco. Some Bosch Fuel injection technology is in the V8 is related to BMW used technology. BMW engines can be found in the new RR, both Diesel (TD6) and gas, as well as the Freelander TD4.
TD5 is a land rover engine.

David,

I had the same scenario - burnt out spark plug wire and then a month later complete valve job. I had 45K though. I was just glad i had that done under warranty. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. They remachined the heads so hopefully it will not happen again.

Everyone else:

My question is when driving hard to get the RPMs up - is it ok to leave it in 3rd for a while going down the highway? It gets the RPMs up but I worry about the transmission. How long should you keep it above 4K. Any advice?

the transmission will be fine blue...it locks up in 3rd and 4th...the lockup helps keep the box cooler...driving like you stole it isn't abuse...lack of maintenence is, and whilst IMHO this Rover engine is actually one of the sweeter V8s out there, it has to be respected in the way it's maintained. Synth oils are great in this respect and always worth the extra $$

Thanks for all the comments. According to the dealer they put the re machined heads in and we had the talk about dropping to 3rd a couple of times and really letting it rev to kick out those deposits. I just don’t drive this hard enough. I live really close to work so , for the most part it does not even get a good warm up when I drive it. Which is probably what led to the 16K valve job. I need to kick it into some action. Don't want the grandma rep, although that’s how my wife describes my driving.

I just had my short block replaced, while it was apart I had a peek at the heads and couldn't believe the amount of carbon build up. I have 55k mi. (Which has now been reset to 0mi.) While it was apart I had them remove all the carbon from the head and replace all the seals. From the sounds of this conversation I need to rev it a little more often. My wife if the primary driver and like David it is an extremely short commute for her 1-2 mi. Looks like I need to drive it once a week from now on.
