My 96 D1 exhaust rotted out and I need to replace it. I am looking for a quiet muffler - real quiet, like stock. No Magnaflow or Flowmasters or cherry bombs please. Anyone had luck w/ any aftermarket mufflers that are very quiet?

TIA.

Hey Joe,

I put on a Flowmaster 50 SUV in place of the original, and another performance flow-thorugh muffler in place of the resinator and it's great. It does have a very slight grumble at idle, and is slightly louder than stock, but much much quieter than just a flowmaster 40 or 50 (tried em both and are quite loud) with no resinator like many suggest. The performance and gas savings is well worth it I think.

Hi Eric, thanks for the response. I think I finally found a good exhaust shop close to my house, and he happens to carry Walker QuietFlows, so I may give that a try. I have used QuietFlows on other vehicles and they are perfect for me, as quiet (or quieter) than stock and free-flowing. That would also make loss of resonator a virtual no-brainer. I'll post back once the work is done. If he doesn't have one that works on my truck, he also has Bosal and Flowmaster.........

joe, if you get the Flowmaster, get the 50 series Delta-Flow. it should be pretty quiet, but with a rumble. i had a regular 50 series, but then later replaced it with a 40 series Delta-Flow and the 40 Delta was actually quieter than the older 50.

here are wav files of when i had the 50 series

Hey Danno, what are you comparing your 40 and 50 series Flowmasters to? Glasspack monsters? (j/k). I tried both a 40 and 50 Delta and they both were damn loud, especially around 1.7K it sounded like a loud airplane resonance. haha

Hey Danno, I listened to the small wav files. That sound great. Is that dual tail pipes or dual all the way?

the 40 series Delta flow IS quieter and has less resonance than the standard 50 series flowmaster.

with the wav files it's all stock pipe with a 50 series installed and the resonator removed. from what i recall, i measured 98db 1 meter away at idle. i think the 40 Delta was about 10db quieter.

One intersting note, because most of the resonance will in the 1800 to 2000 range, it will actually be quieter at about 70 mph than 60, at least that is what I have noticed in the past on other vehicles.

Well, no Walker QuietFlow for me - out of stock.:-(

Better yet, I got a Bosal muffler. Also removed the rusted resonator in favor of a pipe out the back. This one is supposed to be more salt-friendly than the aluminized steel of the QuietFlow.

W/ Bosal and no resonator, it is absolutely dead quiet at idle! And there is a very subtle growl at speed - like other mufflers, but w/ volume down to 1 or 2.

I am very very happy w/ the Bosal, it is quieter than I expected. No gain or hit on performance - the concept of a Disco and performance is funny to me anyway.

I got the muffler from a locally-owned shop, not a chain.

It is Bosal 210-815. They make full direct-fit systems for Rovers:
