Hi everyone! I've been looking over this site the last few weeks and like what I see. Not so kiddy oriented as some of the BMW sites. Anyway, I just sold my '92 325is and will be buying a Disco 2 when I find the right one. Anything to look out for? Any rare options I may find? I did notice that some of you are in the Shennandoah valley here in VA. I'd be interested in talking with some of you about off-roading opportunities around here. I look forward to talking to you all soon. Walter |

Walter- Welcome to Dweb. I have a DI, but I think most people would tell you to either find a lightly used early DII that has the CDL or the CDL linkage still in place or spend the $$$ and get an 04 with the CDL back on. Based on your location in scenic H-burg you should have no problems hooking up with several members of the board and hitting the GWNF. I'm down in Norfolk, Va but will be trying to head that way sometime in the next month or so. r- Ray |

Walter: Depending on what you want to do with the D2 might direct you to a specific "options" set. There are trucks with 18" wheels but they appear to be somewhat rare these days. THere's ACE, SLS and a 7-seater option. FWIW, over here in charlottesville, there's a nice looking D2 (red, w/16" wheels, no ACE, no SLS) that's been sitting for a few weeks. I think it's a 2001 and they're asking $16K. I know you could get it a lot cheaper. I'm going into town today, right by it actually, if you want I'll get the VIN and ODO info... |

Thanks Michael. I'd appreciate it if you could get me the info on that D2. I may have found one in Falls Church that's priced pretty good but I would be grateful for any leads. |

As for rare options I am not so sure on that one. But there where limited editions discoverys. In D1's there where the XD's, they where oriented towards offroad and had various upgrades for that. Look at; http://www.discoweb.org/xd.htm Also in D1's there where the 50th anniversary LSE's, fully loaded and with a plaque and unique color. In d2's there was the Trek eitions, eco-challenge editions and Kalahri editions. See; http://www.discoweb.org/kalahari/index.htm also for the trek see; ../2/36268.html"#444444"> |

Hey Guys, I keep seeing CDL popping up in some threads. What is it and what are the advantages to having it? I think I'm pretty much buying a 2000 model, can it be retro fitted to this year? Thanks again. |

Hi Walter. CDL stands for central diff lock. It's the device that force front shaft to turn at the same speed than rear one. This is usefull when one of your tire loses grip, and instead of having the truck to stop, it mechanically force the other axle to transmit some torque to the wheels and continue to progress. Hope it's clear. This CDL has been replace on some model by electronic devices (ETC) where an electronic computer detects the spinning of a tire that loosses grip and brakes it using regular brakes to transfer torque to the other wheels. These techniques normally have the same effect, by they each have advantages / drawbacks on our vehicules. Krys |

All D1's have the CDL from the factory. (94-99) D2's don't have a factory CDL, however (99-01) some had the transfer case with the CDL installed but lacked the linkage to actuate it. Those are easy to upgrade. D2's from (99-03) that don't have that transfer case with the CDL inside need whole new transfer cases to get it to work, way expensive and rare to find used ones, so I'm told. 04 D2's now come with the CDL again stock. I own a D1 so please refer to the archives and D2 owners that can lead you better in finding a D2 that can be upgraded with just the linkage. Now a bigger question, do you need a CDL. Well it's nice to have, but only important if you plan on off roading your new truck. If you run fire roads only, a CDL isn't that important, a non-CDL d2 can do a lot of amazing things offroad. If your setting up a hardcore expedition rig, then finding a truck you can put a CDL into maybe more important. Best advice is to get the truck and use it, go off road and see what you needs are. Also used Rovers are like used BMW's, they can be wonderful cherry's or big pieces of crap. Getting a carfax history and a prepurchase inspection by a good mechanic is going to make your purchasing experience much better. Don't be afraid of the LR dealers trucks. Most will have a warranty and "should" be certified by LR. They will be more expensive up front, but you might avoid costly problems after purchase.
