I know that this has been pulled thru the mud :-), but I have a question. Does anyone here have experience with Red Clay and mud tires?

If so, what tire would you recommend for a Disco. Not worried to much about size, more concerned with the tires ability to go through the Red clay here in WV.

This will be a dedicated off highway tire, I have a set of AT tires that will be for everyday driving, just need a set of off highway use tires. Of course they will have to drive the highway to get me to my off highway location.

supper swampers boggers or tsl. or jungle treckers or firestone sag. or throw a set of chains on your existing tyres. you can remove them when you hit the pavement. im not too sure about the aviabliity of treckers or sag so that is why i suggested swampers. if you want traction then get the most agressive tread on the market.

Since I will shortly have a second set of rims, I would prefer to have just a second of tires. Swampers might work.

Swampers will be the best choice.
But i've wheeled in the WV clay before, so even Swampers might not cut it! That stuff is slimy:-)

I'm running Swamper LTBs. Other than boggers, they are the best swamper in that type of terrain. Deeper treads than most swampers, and longer outside lugs than any other swamper other than a Bogger.

It does a decent job on the street too as I use them as daily driving tires and have for about 15 months now. I've put about 15k miles on them and they look good for about about 35k miles. I am very pleased with them.

They ARE bias ply so expect some vibration issues, but when properly balanced, they are very, very good.

-P

BTW, I'm running 34x10.50s

red clay

some nasty shit to say the least...now I have NEVER wheeled the red clay of WV...but I have wheeled the red clay of upper Migh. for well over 20 years.

the problem with red clay is that when its dry to slightly wet a AT tread will out perform a MT tread day in and day out...then when the clay gets wet enough it goes directly from a solid to a soupy liquid.

in soupy mud you want a tread patern that is deep with a highly angled tread block. the angled tread blocks pump the mud from under the tread to the side of the tire .

as red clay starts to dry it goes thru a stage where it is very very tacky, in this tacky stage it will load up and turn just about any tire into a slick. the only cure for this is tire spin. spin generates centrifigal force that throws the mud out of the tread for this to be optimized you need as large of voids between the blocks as possible.

and that brings us back to where I started....as the voids get larger the number of blocks per tire goes down and you start reducing dry and slightly wet traction.

I just got of of www.intercotire.com and looking at the super swampers and all the other tires that they offer. I am not sure if these will fit. I only have a 2" OME HD lift. I am currently running 245/75-16's the smallest tire on the site (Other than ATV and Dirt bike tires) were 31x11.50-16LT they state they are 31" OD. Would these fit?

I've had a lot of experience in red clay since that is mostly what we have around here. I have seen the Super Swamper LTB walk right through a lot of red clay and I was very impressed.

I just put a set of new BFG Muds on my 109 which has seen limited use in the lowlands of South Carolina. It has performed extremely well in very bad conditions, mostly in plowed farm fields and in swampy area.

Thom did mention a situation were an AT tire would be better. But in the field I have yet to see this. I see time and time again AT tires just spin and slick out were my bald military tires would hook up and pull the truck through.

As said before, if you are looking for a dedicated set then Super Swamper is the way to go.

Quentin, I looked up Simex tires, but can't find any tire that looks like the one in you post.

Maybe I just don't know where to look.

Joey,
If you've got 245's then you must have modded the rear guards already. I would think about the 9/32-16LT swamper. Run them with tubes and you can air down to 10 psi no probs. You need to run low pressures to get the most out of a swamper. The spare is the swamper

hmmm that looks nice.... I would presume that the 9 is nine inch wide, the 32 is 32 inch tall and of course 16 is rim size.....I am new to buying odd size tires so, please correct me if I am wrong.

Sat's are generally not available now. We got a special run made in Zew Zealand for us but they needed a minimum of 40 to do it, and it took 6 months to get them.
In hard packed clay, the narrower the tyre the better, it really cut in to the surface for traction.
Yes, 9/32-16 are 9"wide x 32" dia on 16" wheel.

Joey, if you don't mind some body cutting, I would try and fit a 9/34-16 swamper. A lot of friends used to run them, but they have all gone to simex now.

I don't think I want to do that much body cutting yet. It still my daily driver and I don't want it to look to radical yet....slowly getting my wife used to look of new changes...

She still hasn't figured out that when I changed the shocks and tires that I put a OME HD 2 inch lift. She just noticed it sits a little higher.

Now if I can just conveince her that the running boards she made me put on are a bad thing....before I rip them off on a trail. :-)

Been running the 265x80x16 Radial TSL for 3 years now, and if I'd go back to that make/size, I'd got for the SSRs. I currently run 35x10.5x15 Bias Simex ETs. I wouldn't compare the two. This is the reasonning I'd advise:

ONE SET OF TIRES:
Go for a "tough" radial, preferably as tall as you can go and as NARROW as your terrain allows. The height is obvious, but you guys may frown on the narow part, but I find that a narrow tire works better in most circumstances, and helps with gas mileage (IF you are concerened), also, if you have a tall enough tire, once you deflate, the footprint would be as large as before. I.e., a 275x70x16 deflated would be the same as a 255x85x16, however, on the road the 255 would be more merciful on gas and IF you do need the hight, well, with some manufacturers you'd get that. My 1st choice would be SSR (if I were i nthe US) or Goodyear MTRs.

TWO SETS OF TIRES:
I'd go with a +75% onroad tread in a nice/economical/safe size for daily use, and then go to the most herrandous offroad tire that I am willing to fit (and that the drive-train can withstand). Bias tires are LEAPS better than radials in durability offroad, so I'd go with SX/Boogers i nthe US, and Simex outside of US.

Just my thoughts.
Goodluck.
