To those with the handheld Cobra, has anyone ever had any problems with the speaker cutting out? The cb was the first thing I bought when I bought my truck over 3 years ago, and it has worked flawlessly up until now. Now, the speaker doesn't work, though when I hit it hard enough, it comes back on for a few seconds. Sooo, guessing bad connection inside somewhere? I am hoping that it is something like the DI window ecu where there is a known solder problem or something (wishful thinking?). It is out of any warranty/guarantee since it is over 3 years old, but has anyone worked with Cobra over something like this? Reasonable repair costs if I can't do it? Thanks, any info appreciated.

Robbie,

I don't have one of these CB's but I remember reading a post here last year about someone who had a similar problem and I think it was John Lee who had a simple solution. I think it involved a rubber ring or something like that to apply pressure to push a contact point down. Maybe do a search for "Cobra 75WXST" on last year's archives (or early this year) and I think you'll find the thread I'm talking about.

Robbie,

I have not had any trouble with it, but I have the firestick external speaker mounted in my truck - so I've never even used the internal speaker it came with.

There is a page on the ExpeditionExchange.com website about those little rubber rings.

Good Luck, Jamie

thanks for the link and info Jamie and Alan. i have seen this on ee before, but i think this is something different. my squelch and volume controls have always been pretty good and they aren't the issue here. the speaker just plain does not work, unless the handset is jolted, then it works for a few seconds and drops out again.

I would just open it up and look for a very loose wire or broken one... shouldn't be that hard to find or fix. I have been working on various CB radios for years. They really are not that hard to work on.

Unless you have some of the new radio shack one, they are a pain.

thanks Joey. think that may be the next move. I did open it up, hoping to find an obviosuly loose wire, but didn't see anything that hopped out at me. just haven't had the time to go poking and prodding to see if it is a loose solder, plus i don't want to fry something, so was hoping maybe there was a quick been there done that.

Robert, I just mounted it with zip ties to my seat rails. I don't like to go swimming or mudding, so flooding isn't too high on my list of worries. you can look at some pictures here: http://cloud.prohosting.com/~rbd4a/my_disco.htm

As per Cobra, you can get a schematic by emailing them for it. This might help.
