Hey folks,

I just bought a set of lights that I'm wiring up to my brush guard. I don't have factory fog lights but noticed recently that on either side of the truck by the head lights, there is a blank plug hanging down. Is this the plug for the fog lights and is it hooked up to the rear fog light switch?

TIA

I would say yes.

Sounds like you found one end of the foglight harness. It's not wired to the rear foglight switch, though. It is more likely that you will find another plug tucked behind the dashboard somewhere, in the area behind the switch cluster where your cruise control switch is. You would put a foglight switch in that cluster, and connect it to that plug.

That's what I was hoping for. This will make installation easy.

Thanks!

Hi Alan,

I seem to recall something about those plugs being controlled by the Computer. As a result the "flag" showing that the fog lights are installed must be set to "yes".

You can get the factory switch at British Atlantic for around $12.

Victor is correct on the D2 but the D1 isn't that advanced.

Whatever you do just do a straight wire job from lights to switch with inline fuse and don't use relays. I tried hooking up my Hellas using a 30amp relay (like the Hella install directions recommend) and using the factory switch. I could never get it to work. I have read where other guys have suceeded in this but I just said screw it after 10 different combinations and not working.

The reason in doing this would be to use your hi and low beams as a on and off for the lights. I like it wired directly anyway because I can turn them on without having the lights or the ignition on. (just remember to turn them off or you may get stuck somewhere with a dead battery... LOL)

You should definitely use a relay.

Most switches are not designed to handle that amount of power.

Alan,

My fog light plugs are located inside the wheel well. If you remove the lower black panel inside each wheel well in front of the front tires, you will find the fog light plug clipped in there. It is small and white and accepts a plug from each fog light. Each has only two connectors.

I think there is a connector looking thing inside each headlight area but that's probably not the fog connectors. Check just behind the wheel well area I'm talking about, unless that's what you are referring to.

I have a 2001 D2.

Thanks guys for the additional info. I had those two plugs I found checked and there's no power running to them.

I'll have a look where you were talking about Greg and see if I see anything there. The dealer said my truck was never wired for fog lights so he didn't think there would be anything pre-wired for me so I may end up just using the wire harness that came with the lights. It's actually pretty straight forward. Everything's there so essentially connect to lights, connect to battery and run through the firewall into cabin and I'm done. It comes with it's own relay and switch but I was just hoping that I could just plug them into those plugs and I'd be done but looks like I'm going to have to do a bit more.

Alan,

Although it sounds like you're going to use the supplied harness, I'll echo Brent on the issue of using the harness and relays.

A pair of 100 watt lamps will use 16.6 amps (100watts/12volts=8.33x2=16.6amps) Using a standard switch will result in burning out the switch over time, if not immediately.

Additionally, the length of wire between the lamps and the switch, as well as the wire back to the battery would have to be thicker to deal with the current. Using a relay makes good sence from a safety and reliability perspective. Not to mention you have much greater choice in switches.

On the subject of switches, you might want to check if there is a plug in the area below where the clock is, next to the cruse control switch. This is where the switch is located when the factory lights are installed.

You might be able to temporarily swap in another switch or use a multimeter to determine if the plug is active.

cheers
Victor

Yea, the wiring harness that comes with these lights has a relay with it too as well as it's own switch. They're PIAA 520's so put out 85 watts. I was planning on putting the switch next to the cruise switch so I'll poke around back there to see what's available but I kind of wanted to use a LR factory switch for consistency and finish so I may just splice the LR switch on to finish it.

Thanks for all the good info.

Hey Alan,

I wired up my IPF's to a factory LR switch. Just wire everything with the supplied relays and wires you got from PIAA, and plug it all into the factory LR switch. Instructions are in the tech section, and it's quite easy. I soldered the wires to my LR switch, but i'm sure you can find compatible pluggies at Radio Shack or something.

This looks like a great thread to jump on for my question about wiring Hella 1000's.

The lights are already installed correctly, according to the intructions. As most of you are ware, the unwanted result is that they can only be switched on with the existing headlights on. In addition, the Hella will not come on when the Hi beams are switched on.

So anyway, one wire coming off the switch is going to the wire that powers(i think ??) the head light. If I take this away what will happen? Hella lights no worky? What would be the appropriate wire to connect it to get around this?

Thanks.

Kristopher,

Check out the directions on this link.

http://www.disco2.com/howto/traveller/auxwire.phtml

I wired mine into the parking lights and it worked fine.
