Hello...

I have 142,000 mi on my '94 D1 with the manual 5 sp. transmission. Does the year of this unit make it an R380 or an LT77? Very recently it is acting up at low speeds like pulling into a red light or backing up out of a parking space, even sometimes when the vehicle is in neutral and not moving. I guess the best way I can describe the problem is that it sounds and feels like as if I droppes the clutch with the gearbox in gear... the disco shutters and makes that associated horrible noise until I depress the clutch. Also, when this just happened today at a red light as I tried to put it in gear as the light turned green, I found difficulty engaging it into first gear - had to pull out in second. I tore into my series transmission with relative success but I know that this transmission is a very different breed than the series land rovers. I would love to hear what you guys think of a diagnosis. Thanks a lot.

Ethan-
Stolen shamelessly from the ECR website: "A quick way to tell if you have an LT77 or an R380 is to look for where your reverse gear is located on your shifter knob. If to get the gearbox in reverse you shift towards the left and up, then you have an LT77. If you need to shift towards the right and down, then you have the R380 version. "

I'm a 5-speed owner also, with 143,000 mi on my D1, which is an R380 and while she's not a spring chicken since replacing the clutch and cylinders she hasn't had any problems.

I'm no expert on the transmission but could it be synchros?

R380,

Sounds like a clutch going bad. If you can do series trans you can do an R380 (with the book :-) )

I agree with Ron, sounds like a clutch issue. A common thing with the rover clutch is for the fingers to wear on the pressure plate, at least that is what i've seen.

Ray is correct also on the reverse location. If it is a LT77, it will be hard to find parts for it if not impossible.

Not necessarily true. UK parts are easy to find. But more to the point no US discos had LT77s

Howzit Ethan...Live from Hawaii....
I recently changed out the clutch on my '94 disco. The unit with the transfercase and transmission brake attached is very combursome..by which I mean ..hard to control...but can be handled by renting a Good heavy duty transmission jack.
My clutch blew out on a routine power shift into on coming traffic....shift....and no more clutch .....on the floor.
Aloha, Louis
