Anyone get this? Before I start something, what are your opinions on the North America edition?

I saw a copy at MAR and was not impressed. Still a lot of European stuff. It is definately not the LR version of "jeep type 4x4" mags. But that is only my opinion

I got the October copy, and I enjoyed reading it. As a matter of fact I ordered a subscription based off of the October issue. I will admit I hope that the NA part will get larger, and I am sure it will if more people in NA start buying and asking for more.

You can't change anything unless you first are willing to try.

I kind of like the European parts - it's the non-euro-trash side of Europe - it makes me feel exotic... like wearing a skimpy swiming suit... like...

Anyway, I thought the last issue with the Trek Discos on the front was pretty good. And the NA articles were pretty well done. This magazine has improved over time. Also, I DO NOT want our LR mags to go the way of the Jeep mags - all white trash chicks with flames painted on the sides of their rigs and contests to see who can have the biggest... lift, with the most shocks, and the largest... implements to make their independent suspension work with the 44" super swampers - besides, the euro mags are just a whole lot better quality all around.

Wouldn't that be kind of like a male size complex thing? :-)

I'm a fan of LRM, more so now that they have taken the time to make a NA issue. While its not perfect its better than what the other magazines are doing with this market (In my opinion). Of course there is a fair amount of how to get your Series II to pass MOT in any UK based magazine, but LRM seems to be spending a fair amount of time with events like the G4 challenge, vehicle based expedition articles, and of course their recent dedication of a portion to North America (for their NA edition). They also seem to do a fair amount of reporting on Discos, and Freelanders (like em or not) so you're not so overwhelmed by Defender after Defender that most of us just can't afford. All told its a decent balance, and like any periodical some issues are better than others.
I just got the Dec issue, which covered MAR (3 articles), Windrock, as well as some other good topics that I found relevant, not to mention some interesting international reporting. Is it perfect-of course not, but it's a good magazine and they at least made the effort to come to MAR and from my interactions with Steve Hoare the staff is quite approachable and very pleasant to deal with.
Just my .02

I think it's a great thing. I subscribed even before the NA issues started, simply because they provided coverage of US events and happenings. I have to admit, I ordered my subscription based on the fact that my truck showed up in the 2002 MAR article, however I've never been happier with my decision.

A friend of mine is the NA editor, and I think he is doing a very good thing for us. He has single handedly pursued the US coverage in the magazine and has brought us a magazine that features people and places we know. Much more interesting to read a magazine and share it with people when you can point and say, "I know this guy. I talk to him on dweb all the time. How cool."

I say Cheers to Steve Hoare for a job well done.

The latest issue also has reviews of the three Discoweb DVDs. I think that's great for this site and it should provide a boost in their sales which would mean more discoweb for everyone. I think that would be my last LRM issue in my subscription since it's started in January and that is the December issue, it's definitely time to renew.

BTW, watch out for other LRM stuff on the web, I just learned that the LRM-NA webmaster is also another LR nutcase (who is local) so it should be a pretty interesting next couple of months/years for North American LR enthusiasts.

This information was taken from the "November" issues of various L/R magazines:

LRM
Total pages: 194
Adverts: 58 pages (approx. 30%)
North American content: 25 pages (approx. 13%)

LRE
Total pages: 210
Adverts: 106 pages (approx. 50%)
North American content: 3 pages (approx. 1%)

LRO
Total pages: 226
Adverts: 111 pages (approx. 49%)
North American content: 7 pages (approx. 3%)

LRW not available from local stores.

LRM is considering further North American expansion depending on feedback and demand.
Suggestions on further improvements are always welcome.

Actually, taking those numbers I come up with this:
LRM
136 Readable pages
25 US pages
18% US Coverage

LRE
104 Readable pages
3 US pages
2% US Coverage

LRO
115 Readable pages
7 US pages
6% US Coverage

I like LRM because it has the most amount of reading/pictures/information. Don't get me wrong, I like the English sections and the English Ads. Nice to see whats going on over there, price wise and trend wise, but I don't need 50% advertising, especially the damn insurance ads which don't help me in the slightest bit.

And don't you just love the Mr. Zen series of articles? LOL

In the Dec. edition I counted 64 full-page ads, this does not include the smaller ads thrown in here and there. Not that I mind the ads but, this is supposed to be the North America edition. There is only one ad in the whole book I saw that was in NA, and that was the Discoweb DVD ad and write up.

For 8.00 an issue, 16 pages of US coverage, and 63 useless ads, I think you guys have your work cut out.

On a postive note, I do like the "laid back" writing style, tech articiles, and product reviews.

Even before LRM came out with the NA edition, I always thought LRM was the best of the Land Rover magazines out there. The NA edition only makes the magazine better in my opinion. Would I like to see even more North American content? Sure, that would be great, but it won't happen unless Steve and LRM gets feedback from us, and tips on upcoming trips and events. As LRM's US readership grows, I think more US specific ads will follow, as well.

- Axel

I subscribed. I like looking at the pictures. I can't remember how much exactly. I think it was around $65 or so on my credit card. I was suprised to see that they charged me another fee for foriegn currency conversion. Did this happen to anybody else?

usually, your credit card pays foreign accounts in foreign currency. the seller does not have to convert anything, because they report your charge as "whatever amount" in "whatever currency." now your card might have charged a fee...but i would check it out. usually the bank issuing the card will have an exchange rate that not only includes the difference between currencies, but also a charge for the service of performing the exchange. it is usually invisable as both are rolled together, but maybe your card breaks it out.

fwiw...

I got a subsription to this mag last year, long before any word of the NA edition and there were already twice as many NA stories in it than the other mags. I also got LROI and LRE, both of which I have not renewed due to being FAR more expensive, and having far less NA content.

The subscription that was offered in October for LRM was $65 for a year. You subscribe right here in the USA, not overseas. That is a little over $5 a copy. I am not sure what the subscription is outside the October offer. Steve?

The other important thing to remember about this is that Steve is right here, almost all the time. He is ONE OF US, and was one of us before he became the NA Editor. So you have a pipeline thru him to LRM...something we do not come close to having with the other magazines.

LAST, sure theres still alot of Euro content, apart from folks liking that, LRM has to remain financially sound. It is obvious that the NA addition is inserted into the magazine that we get in lieu of some of the Euro content they get. If we show that we want it, who knows, maybe we will get our own entirely NA edition?

I personally want to thank Steve for what he has accomplished on our behalf already!!
