Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce that I am the proud new owner of a '96 4.0 SE with 90k miles and the 90k service completed. However, I have a few concerns regarding the general well being of my car, as it has several issues at the moment. My rear doors, for some reason, are manual. They will not lock/unlock with the internal locks or the remote key. Also, my rear left door will not open at all, as the lock/unlock tab seems to have disconnected from the mechanism inside the door while in the locked position. What would be the best way to go about opening this door, then removing the door panels, etc.? Im assuming it will involve breaking into that door, but then how do I go about removing the panel itself? I do not have the mechanics guide for this car, and unfortunately the dismantling of the car is not covered in the standard drivers manual, so any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. As for diagnosing my rear manual doorlocks, Id assume this would be a rather involved problem, but anything that can get me started would help greatly. From this point, all I know is that it does not lock/unlock using the internal locking controls, or the remote controls, and has been happening for a long time. I can find and post additional information if requested. Another concern of mine is a relatively loud mechanical noise coming from the drivers side region, which sounds like a compressor. It activates intermittently, and I thought it may be the compressor for the air suspension because of its rather random on/off timing. Is this noise a somewhat standard thing? I apologize for my rather naive questions; however I am treading lightly with this car and would like to do everything according to the sound advice of other knowledgeable Range Rover owners. Your assistance with my questions is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to the day I can confidently contribute to this message board. -Ian Ulery |

Congrats on the new RR, I too have a 96 4.0se. The noise is probably the EAS compressor cycling on and off, you can replace the compressor rubber mounting bushings if they are worn out and it will quiet it down a little. Pop the hood and run the car, remove the plastic eas cover, watch the compressor to come on and off and diagnose the noise. Noise could also be the ABS brake pump cycling on and off, normal. Here is a very good site for some great RR info: http://www.rangerovers.net

Drivers side? Is this a LHD or RHD car. In LHD the EAS and ABS systems are both just in front of the driver. On an RHD then only the ABS is on the drivers side. Does the noise happen when you turn the ignition to II or only when the engine is running? The former is the ABS pump, the latter is the air suspension pump. Your locking problem is a little more interesting. First of all, I don't know how to break into the locked door and frankly I wouldn't post the information in a public forum even if I did know. All of the locking mechanisms actuate switches in the locks. If only one had failed, I'd be blaming the lock solenoid, but two having failed makes me wonder.... I strongly recommend getting hold of both the workshop and electrical troubleshooting manuals as these will give you the information you need. I would also suggest working on the door you can open first. The rear doors are controlled by the BeCM directly, so you can look into the wiring between here and the door. Also worth checking the wiring through the door post for damage. Having said all of that, my money is on the solenoid in the lock mechanism.
