I have had an odd noise, (it comes and goes) at first I though it was an exhaust leak. It still comes and goes, but when it comes it has been progressivley getting worse and worse. Today it sounded almost like the muffler was hanging off the damn car. It sounds like something loose and rattling. I crawled underneath, and could see nothing loose at all, but it sounds really strong from the Cataletic Converter (I guess that is what is is, the thing just under the driver floor board??). It definatley is not the engine.

Anyhow, just wondering what it could be. Could there be something inside the cat that is loose and rattling around?

Thanks

BJ

Here is a picture of the thing I am talking about. I am questioning what it is, because AB's website has a Cat that looks different from this thing, so I am not sure if it is a Cat.

Cat

BJ, yes that is you CAT. You have two on the Disco both are different shapes and sizes.

If it is making alot of noise and smelling bad, I would change ASAP before it causes other issues. Hopfully it doesn't clog your muffler either.

if you live in a state that does not have emissions like MI... just cut those suckers off ...and weld pipes there... your post cat o2 sensor might set off your check iengine light but better that than too much backpressue because its clogged...or if you have money unlike me just get new cats remember you have to buy the kit and get new gaskets too

Call me crazy, but with a new motor (As per profile) and the fact that it is a '97, which is a OBDII vehicle....it is not advisable to remove the CAT's. This will pretty much ruin the engine, due to the fact that the ECM will not properly manage the engine the way that is should. Replace the Cat or Cats as needed. Save that New engine.

If the cat has NO off-road damage the federal emmissions warranty on cats and engine control units is 8/80. It may be something that you can get fixed under warranty.

Why would it be making so much noise? I think those things have ceramic inside, right? Could that have broken up or something? There is no offroad damage, and it is a vibration, because when I rev the engine or just durring acceleration, it stops.

Thanks for the advise

Yes, the insides break loose and rattle. They had a recall on the RR for this but not the disco.

you can go with a high flow cat. But you have to change both.
The smog parts ARE covered by a long warranty (I was told 100,000 miles).

BJ,

I currently have the same problem on my Disco II (99). At first I thought it was something related to the combustion in the engine because sometimes I cross the mexican-american border and end up using low quality gas. the rattling in my rig goes on and off as you press the gas. I really do not know what causes this. I have 88K miles, and eventhough I go offroad, I do not see any damage to the cats.

to anyone, who sells inexpensive catalytic converters?

jorge, if your cats are indeed bad, then try this: http://www.discoweb.org/warranty.htm

Robbie,

my only concern is that my rig has 88K miles, but the rattling started at about 75K. of course I can not prove that. I will call the dealership anyway. thank you for the headsup.

Jorge
