I'm trying to get new tires...235/70/16. Looking at Bridgestone Dueler AT and BFGoodrich AT. The problem is Costco will not put eith one on because they are not rated "H". Any Suggestions...I don't want to get the Micheline snychrones...but that is all they say they wil put on for me. Advice? Appreciate it!

Dont tell them what car it is for, or go to another dealer. I have BFG AT's and think they are a great all around tire. A couple places would not put tires on for me, but sears did. Or order them online then just take your wheels to a place to have the tires mounted and balanced.

Hey Rick,

I have heard that the BFG's start to get pretty noisy around 20000 miles...what's your opinion bud?

I got BFG AT's last winter and so far they're great. Very quiet and great traction. Rob have a look at Bridgeston Dueler Revo AT's and Yokohoma Geolander AT + II. I've heard good things about them as well.

I've also heard Costco being very sticky about spec ratings so I'd suggest buying the tires from them and maybe getting someone else to mount them or just go somewhere else.

Rick and Alan,

Thanks for the help here. I'll probably pay more by not getting 'um at Costco, but at least I'll get the tires I want. Probably go with the BFG's or Bridgestones....whichever is cheaper :o)
Have a good 'un buds.

Rob:

Used to have BFG AT's for 30K+. They were very good on road, wore evenly and not noisy. My only complaint was the clicking (which you could hear even at highway speeds) from having gravel stuck in the treads. MT's will provide better off road performance with some decrease in on road ability (mainly in stopping and wet weather ability).

Rob,

I just got the Yokohama's that Alan mentioned, on my '98 Disco and I'm really happy with them. I also know of some others that have had them for much longer and rave.

In general... BFG AT tires will not get noisey unless you wheel to the point where you take really large chunks from them, do not keep your tires balanced, do not rotate and do not watch pressure. I have run BFG MT and BFG AT. I have run the AT up to 50k miles without any noise issues. I had noise issues with the MT, but it was a result of cupping and improper balancing. Whenever you have your wheels balanced make sure they do a static/load balance (I think that is what they call it). BFG AT are definitely good tires, great on wet pavement, packed snow and moderate off road, but they will get eatin away pretty quickly by gnarrly rocks.

Brian,
I do not know much about balancing tires, but i do know a fair deal about measuring the balance of propelles. We do a dynamic 2 plane balance. they stopped static balancing abotu a year ago before i got there. Does anyone do a dynamic balance on tires? or do they just consider it not worth it? I have noticed a huge difference between 1 plane static balance, and 2 plane dynamic. Dynamic is much more accurate and can be made to run smoother.

Rob,

The BFG AT's and Dueler Revo AT's will be similar in price. They're both a bit on the expensive side. Bridgestones might be a bit cheaper.

I'll second Mark's comment about the clicking. You tend to get a lot of pebbles stuck in teh tread so you will hear clicking a lot during the summer when you have the windows down. I don't really hear anything with the windows up though.

I went with Tirerack.com, and had them drop ship the tires to a local tire and alignment place that the website recommended. They did a fine job (except for pumping the tires to 65lbs) and it costs less then what Costco would have charged me. Costco doesn't like putting on non-factory recommended sizes for some reason - probably liablility.

Quentin,

I put the BFG Commercial TA-traction on my wife's Disco.

I thought they'd be good, the new version of the Trac-Edge.... I was wrong, I don't like 'em.

They feathered out into a sawtooth pattern, they won't hold air, they've gotten REALLY loud, they're okay for dirt-roads, etc., but aren't better than ATs.

Skip 'em, go with something else. Dunlop R/Ts, some MT tire, whatever you like...

I just put some Goodyear M/T's on I love em. What a difference in looks. I had BFG AT's and I don't notice much difference in ride on the road. I got mine at Discount tire and they didn't give me any trouble.

Rob, in the event you haven't purchased a set of tires yet. Definitely go with the BFG ATs. I put them on my 96. Great tire. Get them in 245/70-16. They are a D load range tire, which is appropriate for your the Disco. The BFG AT in this size is pretty much the same size as the stock Michelins. Check the specs on Tirerack.com to see for yourself. This size wont rub either.

I'm really bummed that Cooper stopped selling their STT and its pep boys only ...who refuse to fit the 235/85-16 on my truck.

Another big thumbs up for Geolander AT+II's. They were inexpensive (discount tire), very decent on road, did fine in the last snowstorm and seem to be wearing very well.

I previously had Pirelli Scorpions, and the tread simply evaporated on them. I got less than 15K miles out of them.

on my second set of BFG ATs. Put 86K on the first set, sold them with tread still on them. No harsh noise, will second the stone click remark from above. Wear better and longer than the GoodYear MTs I used to use and much quieter.
