Just got xm radio installed, and Im getting a really bad hiss and alternator whine, and Ive narrowed it down to being the power. Right now it is plugged into the cigarete lighter. But heres the problem, the radio runs off of 6v not 12.. is there anyway to hard wire this and give it a better ground so i dont have the alternator whine anymore? |

Hi James: Try running a new power line from the battery and connect a cigarette lighter connector (probably costs about $5 at any parts supply) and also connect an inline noise suppressor (available at any autoparts store or car stereo shop) and this should fix the problem. Or you can put a noise suppressor on the stock cigarette lighter positive wire. It sounds like you have a ground loop problem so you may want to take the time to check all of the grounds. Good luck ! |

I will assume that you are using one of the Delphi units with a vehicle adapter, because that sounds really familiar. I have this in my truck (hooked up to an alpine head unit) and I have three other friends that have these in three different cars, some on Factory units some not.....All of them make this noise. Because the cigarette lighter attachment is the 12volt to 6 volt converter you have to use it, the only way to fix the problem is to run by Radio Shack (or some similar store) and get a ground loop isolator and plug it into the RCA's. That unit is great but for some reason, they cheaped out on the power supply for vehicle applications, I am really surprised that people haven't made a big issue of it, because even over at xmfan a lot of people complain about it. -Stuart |

Here's how I wired mine... http://www.pbase.com/image/20254344 The xm power is the one closest to the dash. My friend has the same unit and on his car we cut the cord and just pushed it in with a non-essential fuse in the fuse box. Works just fine. You just have to separate the ground wire from the power wire and hook them appropriately. We chose a non-ignition required fuse so that the xm can be used without the key in. Jamil |

Of course I would just go completely different route.. Its 6 volt, so wouldnt it be easier to just cheap out and stick 4 AA batteries into small box? Then you can just keep recharger for them in truck for those occasions when they ran out of juice. Not only it would prevent power draw, but also it would HEAT less (as 12v to 6v transformation would be heating up, and eat more juice). But then i am simple folk |
