I am considering trading my 96 Disco for a RRC. My Disco has a new "complete" rear third member with Detroit locker and heavy duty half shafts (from GBR), that I would like to keep and transfer to the RRC I choose. Can some one tell me if the complete third member and heavy duty half shafts can be swap to the RRC? If so, what year of RRC should I look for.

You can swap it into a RRC 93 thru 95. You can swap it into earlier RRCs if you also swap spindles and hubs as well, which is easy to do. You don't have to do anything to the brakes.

Randall, thank you for your reply. So any RRC between 93 and 95 should be a simple swap of the complete third member and the heavy duty axles. 92 and earlier I would need to also swap the stub axles hub and the spindles...correct? Excuse my ignorance but, what are the spindles?

Han, good to hear from you...it's been a while. I have seen some pics of you RRC, very nice I must say. Yeah, the Disco is proving many problems lately, it needs a new cylinder head gasket; it is not overheating yet but I know its coming, and other issues that I am balancing to see if it cost effective to repair or to upgrade to a RRC. Sam, Brian and I keep kicking the idea, they want me to go to the dark side. I like to LWB but how does it do off the pavement? Is yours the LWB? What ever I get I want to use the third member with the Detroit..it is only 2000 miles old.

well, like mr smith mentioned... you'd be looking for 93-95 either SWB or LWB. i have a SWB and love it... actually i dig the LWB as well. theoretically, SWB better then LWB off pave. though LWB has more room and i hear drives slightly more comfy than SWB. regardless... both work fine

I will trade you my '87 RRC with the heavy duty gear driven transfer case for your Disco! My wife misses her Disco so much.

jos! do it buddy!!!
you will not regret the offroad worthiness of the RRC. go for one with an LT230. man, yer gonna be in good shape with center & rear locked up.
plus, you get to do the sawzall special :*

Hey Jon, how's the baby? Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am actively looking for the right RRC.

Han, the difference is not in how comfy or not.
I guess my comparison is not apples-to-apples, but in my observation, a sway-bar-less 89 RRC with OME HD springs rides better than the 96 Disco with the same springs and Bilsteins, and 95 LWB with Bilsteins beats them both by far and large on the highway (in town, too!) - it just feels absolutely stable! I rarely get to drive the LWB - but whenever I do, I find myself pissed off at traffic being slow... and then see 90-95 at the speedometer!
The ride itself is no smoother than in the 89, but there's much less sway and wandering.

So Jose, the right path is Steve Cooper's - take a LWB, and put LT230 with 1.4:1 high range gears, and you'll have a truck for life.

jose... go easy on the tasting... believe me when you get yours... you'll find yourself under it pretty often and... oh keep your mouth closed when working under the car. unless you need more tasting.

Jose,

LWBs do well off-highway. we had out ours out in Moab last year and had a blast with it. yeah, there are times when you drag the rear and that was with a 3" lift and 32" tires. we dragged the hitch which has "hit" in it anyhow and had no problems.

the extra room behind the front seats is really nice if you carry alot of stuff. for us, we can put a cooler plus still have room for one of the Labs to stretch out on long trips.

Just budget to change out the EAS system with coils if the one you're considering still has it.

OTOH...

the look on the faces of bystanders when you fire up the LWB and it goes up an inch or two is priceless.
It's only next to spinners.
