I'm in a dilemma finding a set of OME shocks to fit with the MEDIUM-duty 3" Green Monsters that I'm ready to install on my '94 D1. The truck has 235/85/16's with trimmed fenders. I want good articulation off-road but good-handling on-road manners, as this vehicle is a daily driver. I've gone over the info at EE and have looked through the archives here at DWeb but am still up in the air especially for rear shocks. I realize that with a 3 or so inch lift I'll need longer brake hoses. It looks like the longer N73's for the front and either the N25's or the N76's for the rear, but you need a special mount for the N76. I'm also concerned with how soft the N25 is supposed to be, effecting road handling. The vehicle is never loaded very heavy with gear but will probably see a heavier front and rear bumper (maybe with a winch) and a roof rack in the near future. I won't mind if a lose an inch or so with this added weight - I could live with a 2" lift just fine. Anyway, sorry for the long post but I would greatly appreciate any advice/opinions on this matter. Thanks in advance...

stay away from the n76 shock.
not valved correctly for these vehicles.
i have a set in my garage that replaced after less than 300 miles. the n73 are also very soft but not as bad as the 76's.
EE offers great information, but read carefully, they offer these shocks as an option but warn that they are not correct.
this shock setup makes these vehicles handle poorly.
for what is worth, 3" lift 255/85-16 now sportin' 10" fox shocks in the front, 12" in the rear.
keep lookin, and be willing to pay for shocks that are best suited for your setup.

Hey, thanks for the advice Marc.

I'm still on the hunt for shocks to fit this 3" set-up. Where did you get the fox shocks?

Thanks again,
Ethan

Ethan-

I'm not really familiar with the Green Monster springs but I assume they actually give you 3" of lift. If so, you definitely need extended brake lines.

Why not go for the OME LTR's or Bilstein 7100's?

Both are excellent quality and offer adjustability advantages. I believe the OME's bolt on with no changes (could be wrong). I'm sure EE could set you up very nicely.

Bilsteins would require some changes as they use a 1/2 " loop mount both ends front and rear (versus stock 3/4" top rear and stem bottom and stem to stem front) so have to use different front top (D2 shock tower) and loop bottom and rear top and bottom mounts.

I'm currently using Bilstein AK7112SB for rear and AK7110SB for front on RRC with 275/78 valving. You can get these from Bill at GBR or other Bilstein vendors.

My 2 cents-

ethan,
greg does bring up a good point, you will need to lengthen your brake lines when you run a longer travel shock.
the fox shocks i purchased through a SLC local rock crawling shop. though greg seems to be leaning towards the ome/bilstein option, my opinion is that fox makes a higher quality product. i had the bilstein setup on my disco also, but in the end i'm running the fox.
i do know that if it's travel that your looking for, the LTR's are not the way to go. most people who run these shocks add all thread to lengthen the shock or use a scorpian racing lowering mount to lower the upper mount. it works well enough, but not my cup of tea.
greg also brings up the fact that you will need to change the shock mounts to run a loop to loop shock. these mounts can be purchased from most aftermarket rover shops or can be made by any fab shop. i lean toward the external front shock setup, but that brings up other cost associated issues (but man the travel is wicked).
in the end it comes down to how you use the truck and how much you want to spend.

when you call Bill @ GBR, keep in mind that he is very conservative when it comes to long travel issues and he is a bilstein retailer, so that's what his going to push.

Wow Mark we just saw that set up last week and you already have orderd installed and tested. Man I'm going to stop by and check it out. I didnt know Factory could get Fox that fast. Did you build the front external mounts or did you get them from $G. I was going to order the external front shock mounts from $G I firgured if I ordered now I would have them by April 04.
