OK - I am posting this for a friend, but he needs help. Situation - blown head gasket and wanted to do it right. He send said block and heads off to machine shop. They mill the heads and block. He then goes to LR dealer and tries to obtain new main and conrod bearings. They ask for the block number so they can have an appropriate association. Well...since the block was milled, it removed the block number (If you are lost at this point don't bother to respond).

So what should he do? He does have the VIN, but it will take weeks to get the appropriate application number...and that is even assuming it is the same block. The thing I can't figure out is: How many different variations can they really have in the tolerances of the lower bearings in a '95 D1? It would seem to me that the bearings would be of all the same tolerance.

Any ideas would be appraciated.

Curtis,

Cold comfort for your friend. My cousin, a land rover owning mechanic, tells me that there are indeed batches of product that match bearings to crank and conrod dimensions/tolerances. Hence the need to identify the batch by association. So much for mass production!

Pity the shop didn't have a clue!

Mahn,

Thanks and unfortunately this was my suspicion. If anyone has any ideas my ears are open.

Curtis,

Are there any reputable Hi performance shops in your area? You could have a set fit to your application. Its time consuming but the mains and the rods could be machined for the appropriate tolerances. If you guys were local I could suggest a couple of shops that could align hone the mains and true-fit the rods. Any reputable rebuilder has the tools. Also if you know someone who has the tools to measure the mains and check the clearances you can take the numbers and chances are Childs and Albert’s has the bearings that will suit your needs. You may have to have a set made, which is possible to do with this company, last I remember they had the machinery on site to do this. Don’t dread the cost, its not as expensive as you might think.

www.roversnorth.com or www.aluminumv8.com has the bearings in standard, .010-.030 undersizes. They haven't changed for years so don't sweat it. I changed out mine with a batch of standard size 30K ago no problems.

Thanks Ron and Geoff. Those are two great alternatives I will pass along. The friend is Edrward Bibb and I imagine he will chime in this evening.

I took my engine to a hi performance shop. Bearing size wasn't an issue.

Why have just a WORM when you have already opened the Can.... My local rover dealer can obtain the block number in a matter of days.
In order to obtain the correct bearings, the block SS# is required, which of course was milled off.... Nothing wrong with "Learning from your experiences". Thanks for your input. btw, Piston rings from the dealer are $43 a cylinder..... And I thought boat parts were golden...

Oh Man! Don't EVEN tell me you pulled Widowmaker unassisted with open diffs. If you did then you da man! Ed & I came up to it back in March and decided it was makable, but we chickened out:-)

I can't wait to get all of the stories. Lets see how the weather looks Thanksgiving weekend. I am free Friday-Sunday.

Sure sorry we missed out. I knew there would be some stories to be analyzed. The California trip has turned out to be quite an expense.
