I have noticed that my muffler rattles every once in a while at the rear of my Disco 2. It is not that bad and no lights are coming on. Its just that I am used to working on my truck and I want to see if I can quiet this rattle, (basicly is another project to keep me busy if I get bored). Any ideas what the cause of this rattle could be? Any ideas on how to fix it?

If you mean the Resinator at the back of the exhaust system. If it is rattling, it is probably rusting from the inside out. I would either replace or remove and have a piece of pipe put in its place.

The resinator is just to keep the sound level of the exhaust at a lower level.

The reason they rust if normally from driving short distances, the exhaust gets hot and burns off the moisture that has built up from sitting. But if it doesn't get hot enough to burn off all the moisture, then when it cools it will build up more moisture....moisture and hot metal will equal rust very fast.

I second Joey's comments...my first rusted at 55k...my second with longer journeys has survived 80k

Carl,

Take a look at your rubber gromments that hold your exhaust system in place. If they are leaning or tweaked, then you have an abnormal bend somewhere in the system. This bend can cause a pipe to ride against a frame bolt causing said name rattle.

I just went through this because I bent a pipe between the Cat and the muffler. The solution was:

#1 Place solid pipe into muffler.

#2 Heat area of abnormal bend with torch.

#3 Have a buddy move muffler in direction to correct abnormality via solid pipe.

#4 While buddy holds pipe in place, remove torch heat. Continue to hold into place for a minute. WHAMMO, you are fixed.

Again, this is only based on my personal experience with my D2. Hope this helps,

Paul

If it helps, when I had my warranty stuff done at the dealer they told me that there was a rattle the rear cat. (It just started when I got it back from my warranty work at the dealership last Friday).

It is the muffler bearings! I have had them go out on all my vehicles. They are cheap and easy to replace, usually under $5.00 at AutoZone for a pair, instructions are included in the package.

or your muffler is hitting your heat shield like mine.
