My XD is really screwing up. Here is part 1: 1. I read that the code reader is under the passenger seat. For the life of me, I cannot find anything under the passenger seat other than the two wires for the CD changer (not installed) I looked under the both seats of my XD and my 98 LE, nothing. Please advise if you know where this is. Part 2: the issue. Two evenings ago, I was driving home and the engine started to drop speed intermintantly. It was so bad, that I didn't think I was going to make it home. It acted like it wasn't getting any fuel. Over the last two days, I have started it and just hoped it worked itself out. I took off the plate to access the fuel pump and gave it a listen. It sounds okay, and similar to my 98. I released the valve on the fuel rail both when off (slight squirt) and when the engine was running (major spray). The wierd thing was that it started to run fine today. I took it for a short drive and no issues. I drove it to the gas station and dumped a bottle of Chevron Techron and about 12 gallons of gas in the tank. On the way home it started to do it again. I am concerned that the engine is fighting the transmission, and something bad is going to happen. When the problem initially started, the Check Engine light was not on. now it is (therefore the code reader question). At "idle" the rpms jump all over the spectrum on it's own. It can go as high as 4K rpms to 750. Any thoughts on this? I am wondering if it is something other than fuel system. Could the stepper motor cause this? Brendan 97 XD 41,0000 miles 98 LE |

hey Brendan, not sure on the actual problem itself that you are having, but 96+ are OBDII trucks, therefore no on board code reader. take it to an autozone or advance auto, and most of the places will read your code for free. now, on to your problem, you may have a problem with your stepper if at idle it jumps everywhere, but i doubt that is causing your loss of power issue. when was last tune-up? plugs, wires, filters, etc? someone else should jump in here with some better ideas. |

The code reader plug is below the dash above the fuel peddle. Your other issue is either a fuel filter or your VSS. Either one should not be to hard to change. |

Thanks Robbie. I went to the tech section and got my info from it. It said that 4.0's have a LED reader under the seat. I will re-read it to see if I misinterpreted something. I just pulled the stepper out and it is carboned up pretty bad. There is a slight build up along the "collar" part of the post. I am going to clean it and see what it does. B.K. |

I switched the fuel pumps from my xd to my 98 le. No change whatsoever so I am going to rule out fuel pump. The engine seems to do what it wants now. It will idle around 750 rpm, but if I tap on the gas it goes all over the place. Could it possibly be the ECU? If so, will my ECU in my 98 work in my 97? I could just swap them out to see if that is the problem. (oh, and where exactly is the ECU) B.K. |

Brendan, when was the last time you changed you fuel filter? Pull the air hose going into the Fuel injections system and check for crude build up there as well (after the MAF). After changing the fuel pump, is it giving you issues while driving or parked? Did it give you the same issues prior to? Of course you may have caused issues with the stepper motor after you cleaned it. VSS or fuel filter is still my thought though. If you didn't cause issues cleaning the stepper motor. |

Here is what I have done so far: -Switched fuel pumps from the LE and XD -Installed new fuel filter -Cleaned stepper motor (carboned up) I purchased an OBDII autoscanner today. Here are the codes that I received: -P1316 Ignition System or Misfire Manufacture Control -P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Any thoughts? Brendan

I have been hanging out in the archives section researching the above codes. What I have "discovered" is the standard fix is to replace plugs and wires, although about 70% said it didn't affect anything. I couldn't find any info about the final solution to the problem. Valves was common. My XD has 41,000 miles. At around 34,000 Tom Wood in Indy performed a valve job to the tune of about $3,500 (this is what inspired the previous owner to sell it to me) Their work is still under warrenty, but I hope that isn't the problem. Anyone have any inisght about my situation? Brendan

brendan-does this stuttering happen all the time, or only intermittantly (and run normally in between). if so is it off after rain or humidity? the ECU is next to the washer resevoir in the PS wall. it is covered with a black plastic box. i think you need testbook or autologic to swap the ecu. cheers, carl |

It happens all the time. It started while driving in the rain, but there was no sign of abnormal moisture in the engine area. I will buy some plugs today and see what previals. B.K. |

brendan, i have experienced something similar, except always after rain and always between 1500-2500 rpms. engine stutters but does not stall. happens under load and at a standstill. still troubleshooting... good luck, carl |

Okay, here is the enfuckment of the day. I replaced the plugs (had to go back because the moron at the parts store gave me the wrong plugs-probably for a Land Cruiser) and they were all pretty carboned up. I checked the wires and they are fine. Damn thing was still running as before. Out of frustration, I pulled on the throttle and held it around 4K for a few seconds. Came back down to idle and was running better, but still crappy. I got in the XD and hooked up my OBD II Autoscanner to re-check codes. Here is the fun part: Now I have the following codes: P1313 P1314 P1316 Autoscanner says misfiring on all cylinders. Code list on spanishtrailrovers.com shows it's a cat issue. I decided to drive her down my drive, and I suddenly thought "I wonder what would happen if I delete the codes" so I stopped the disco, shut off the engine and proceeded to delete the codes. I restarted the engine, check engine light went off, and down the road I went. Drove the damn thing about 10 miles and it didn't miss a beat. I spent over 2 days screwing with this thing, and for the life of my I am clueless as to why it is fine? Although I really don't care because it is running again! There is some chatter from the cats, so I am sure that replacement is in order and that is what was causing the issues. I will contact LR-Indy on Monday . Thanks for the tips and advice. Until the next issue... Brendan 97 XD 98 LE |
