The decaying clearcoat is really starting to look crappy. I know paint is usually the least of one's worries ('specially for us Series folks...) and I don't mind custom *pinstriping*, but this clearcoat looks like leprosy....

Anyway, I'd like to paint the bonnet flat or matt black. Most hood black-out decals only cover the center section, not the sloping sides where the clearcoat looks the worst, so paint might be the easiest route to go - and cover a multitude of sins. But I think flat black paint by itself would start to look pretty sh*tty PDQ with brush, mud, oily fingers and whatnot. Is there a paint specifically made for this application?

Cheers

I've not seen special "bonnet" paint.

Jeff A. just used roll-on bedliner in the back of his Disco, and once he was done, he decided to tape off and paint the center section. It's, um, different. It's not bad, don't get me wrong.... but, I think I'd go with a matte-paint myself instead of the textured look.

I hadn't thought of that before, and, it may be why the center section is the part that's usually done, instead of the whole hood.... if you just blacken the center, but not the outer part, then the glossy nature of the outer part makes it easier to clean up. Hmmm.......

Anyway, just some ramblings. Sorry I don't have a better answer as to what kind of paint would be the "best". Krylon would suffice, and would be really cheap, and would be easy enough to touch up again and again.

Have you thought about just having the hood redone? From talking to a couple of bodyshops in the past, they seem to like clear-cloat because it is easier to "patch" the paint, that they can sand, spray, then overcoat, and get it to look decent w/o having to do an entire repaint.

I think, though, that if it was me (and the wife would let me do it :-) ), I'd go get a better quality epoxy primer and a pint of PPG or DuPont matte and do it well..... Her clearcoat isn't looking too good itself, but, she refuses to let me go with a black hood on it.... sigh.....

FWIW...
