I tried replacing my antenna by accessing the inside fender through removal of some plastic rivets (as some had suggested). I tried removing the center rivet and viola! the rivet broke.
There's gotta be an easier way.
Fishing? Seemed frustrating. Maybe sticking a gum on the end of a clothes hanger? I don't know. Any suggestions?

I just replaced mine. I took the inner fender out, those little plastic fasteners suck. I would just do you best to get them out and then replace them with new ones when you are done if you have fucked them up. Going slow and taking your time seems to help get them out without mangling them so much. The biggest problem I had was the fucking nut holding the antenna. The pot metal casing inside the fender would just sheer apart when I tried to hold it to loosen the nut. I ended up drilling it out.

Also, you don't have you route the wire all the way back to you radio. There is a connector behind the glove box towards the left.

There is always the partial fender removal technique. Remove all the fasteners on the fender top, and rear (door jamb side). Fender can then be moved enough to allow you to R&R the antenna. Connector is behind the glove box, which is easy to remove. Whole job can be done in 30-45 minutes

Dosent work..

Good Luck!
