Anyone given any thought to opening up the rear half of the roof (behind the "step") and having a safari-style roof?

There's a chance I posted this on the "other" board too -- sometimes they're a little more Sawzall-happy than the folks around here.

I was thinking more of just cutting away the top surface of the roof and leaving the side panels, windows, etc. Why? Because I had a dream where I did it...

Chris - that is awesome.
What about a full convertible with a bimini top and full defender style roll bar? Or basically why not get a Defender? I think all of us on a nice summer day though about it, but when its -10 and its snowing, the thought passes.

Why not a defender? LOL -- I'd have one now if it were possible.

This is not something that will occur anytime soon -- daily driver in Wisconsin means COLD winter commute. Maybe if/when it's a trail-only rig or a second vehicle...

Hey Andrew, I was thinking you meant to cut the back greehouse off. Just removing the roof piece is cool! How about a sliding ragtop like old VW's had? A big one like the VW bus. Check out the volkswagon parts sites. There are companies that will sell you a complete kit, any size.

IMO - if this is not done spending a whole lot of time and money solving a whole lot of problems, it is not going to be pleasant to the eye, or effective.

All this time and money spent to do that, could probably equal that 'fender you want.

However, if you figure out a design addressing issues such as drainage, sealing, wiring, safety of rear passengers, and can do this without spending thousands, then by all means, best of luck to you.
