This all happened at the same time- about 30 minutes ago. Been searching the Haynes manual, checking fuses and the archive since then...but nothing: -Cannot remove key from ignition- will not turn counterclockwise enough to the right position. -Truck starts fine, but cannot change gear out of park. -Directionals won't work, headlights and hellas work fine. -left driver's side taillight and running light won't work. -side running lights won't work. possibly something with the alarm? Remote will cause locks to unlock, but will not cause the alarm to activate or lights to flash (probably due to key stuck in ignition) Anyone have any idea what gives?? |

My TJ had the key problem. I couldn't get it to turn enough to remove the key. It was the 'shift interlock' causing the problem. The shifter wasn't going far enough foward, I don't know if this is your problem but I thought it might give you a place to start. Good luck and post what you find out. Lewis |

Try replacing the break switch that the break pedal pushes when you hit the breaks. This went out on my disco and I couldnt remove the key or shift it into any gear. Will cost you around $30 from the dealer and takes all of 3 mins to install. |

On my 97 Disco I had the same problem one year ago. The only way I could solve it was to remove the ignition. It is not that tought believe it or not. However, six months later my key would not remove from the ignition but still opertated. The key remains there today and I use the spare to lock and unlock the door. The bottom line is that the mechanical ignition is a weak link, but removing is remarkably easy. Hope it helps, Lee |

Did you bump the CDL? I know the key won't release if you've done that... |

Appreciate all the advice - might try replacing the brake switch first, then remove the ignition (with Haynes help, of course), see if this works. Bloody hell. I don't think I bumped the CDL, but I'll try fiddling with that, as well. I'll post if any of these solutions work- if anyone else has anything to chime in, please let me know. Truck is a 98 DI. Thanks again. |

Could this be electrically related, however? All lights were working fine before this occurred. Grrrrrrr |

Same happened to me was the Brake Switch.... do this... when you hit the brakes... have someone look behind your truck and see if the rear brake lights come on.... if not.. then its the brake switch. Good luck Rich Peterson |

Instant tip . Swap the connections from the heated rear window with the window mounted brake light. Use HRW switch to fool the shift interlock into thinking you have your foot on the pedal by hitting the HRW switch |

chris- when you swap the connections, do you mean swapping them at the back window or at the fuse block? |

Okay- here's the update: Replaced the brake switch. No change. I think I may have several problems, but I'm wondering if the alarm is to blame. Dealer doesn't have an opening until December 4 (!) so any help is still greatly appreciated...here's a recap: Truck will start fine, but will not shift out of park. After turning off engine, key will not come out of ignition. However if I disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, then I can remove the key. Key remote will lock and unlock the doors- when unlocking, directionals will flash once (normal operation). When locking with the remote, directionals will not flash at all. Remote battery is brand new. If I lock the doors with the remote or by key and then unlock and open the passenger door, alarm sounds (normal operation). Headlights come on fine. Hellas wired into the foglights come on fine. Side running lights do not come on at all, unless unlocking with remote. Brake lights do not operate. When lights are on, rear passenger upper and lower lights illuminate (normal operation) but driver side upper and lower lights do not illuminate. Fog lights work. Everything else mechanical -radio, cig lighter, sunroofs, mirrors, console lights- works fine. Dealer says I might have some corrosion on the fuseblock, but I don't see any. Fuses and fusible links all check out okay. Apparently if brake lights are not functioning, then its impossible to shift out of park (safety feature). Brake light bulbs look fine. Any suggestions?

chris- I'm befuddled by switching the connectors. The connectors for the heated window are at the bottom sides of the rear window and only have about 6" of wire each. The rear brake light is at the top with two connectors coming off of it about 2". Do I need to splice some wire/connectors in to switch these out? Blue - thanks for the info. Do you know how to "jump" the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire at the brake switch??
