I have a D2 with 85k and Im starting to wonder about my shocks. How ca I test to see if they need replacing, and does anyone have a good shock replacement. Should I replace springs too? I am new to this game. Oh, and I don't want to change my stock ride height even though I do a wee bit of offroad.

YEah I have the same question. How do I know when my shocks have gone south?

The easiest test for shocks, is to bounce any giving corner of the Vehicle. If front fender, put hands on to of vehicle and bounce, if rear you can stand on one corner or the other and then jump off.

Basically what you are looking for is to see if the vehicle continues to bounce more than once. If it goes up and down 1 time should be fine if it goes up and down 2 or more times, change shocks.

You will also notice that tire wear will be effected and when you drive over bumps you should feel that the suspension seems to bounce.

As far a springs, it is more up to you than anything. But you will notice that the ride height may not be as high as it used to, when new.

If your use is mostly on road, we typically replace them with Bilstein shocks. For more off road, we tend to go OME shocks and springs.

I have been very satisfied with the Bilsteins and LR EX-Heavy Duties up front and HD Springs in the rear. Now if it'll stop breaking down I'll buy the winch and bumper for up front... Streat performance I feel is up, as well as off road. Ride is still very stock - a little tighter.

Personally, I would give the shocks "a bounce or two" after putting pressure on them. Also, if they are leaking, then they are shot. Sometimes a great deal on OE shocks can be found on Ebay or in the for sale forum at this board.

Your shocks are toast dude, OEM shocks are good for 25 or 30K. I put in Bilsteins earlier this summer, like'em fine...

Hey, has anyone thought of getting the Pro-Comp shocks? I forgot the part number, but they did a review on them on this months Land Rover International (I think that's the name), and they fit straight into the Disco... plus, they seem to have a great price...

I agree most OEM, particularly on domestic trucks, last about 25K miles. The stock Woodhead LR shocks actually last quite a while. I still have the original rears (118K miles) and the ride is stiff, though a bit softer than the front end which has Bilsteins. They usually show signs of leaking (oil) when they go.

Bilsteins are best value IMHO, but the OME shocks may preserve stock (or stock +1" lift) best since the travel is limited by the shocks.
