My 2002 Disco makes a "clonk" sound in traffic. I found a link to a supposed explanation.
http://www.off-road.com/RoverWeb/news/Disco.clonk.html

I'm hoping someone here knows whats up and can shed some light on the subject. I used to drive really carefull to avaoid it, but the Dealership said it was normal; and that the Range even does it. So I'm wondering who's right. Thanks.>JB

It is becoming "normal" but it shouldnt happen. If your truck is fairly stock and under warranty, id complain my ass off about it. becasue just becasue it does happen to a lot of people doesnt mean we haev to take it. If you want to quiet it down, try changing the trans fluids religously. I think some people have gotten it replaced under warranty.

I went to the dealership right away when I noticed it and complained, so there is a record of it. I did install an OME lift and put 265/75/16's on it but that's it. They seem pretty cool, we'll see. I'll bring in the posts and see what they say.>JB

Having a record of it doesnt mean much. Ive complained abotu stuff and asked them to make sure it was noted on my record. Next time i went in for service and said the problem was still there, for some reason they had no idea what i was talking about because it was not noted on my record. Theres a shocker. Maybe your dealer is different. I have since changed dealers and havnt had a problem with the new one yet, other then its farther away and i didntget a free loaner because i didnt buy it from them.

all "all wheel drive" vehicles and "full time 4wd" vehicles have a lot of gears and such that have to not only be meshed to work correctly, but also have to have a certain amount of slack in the system to work. it can indeed be normal to hear an occasional clunk when the lash in the system unloads during coasting and then reloads when power is applied. it happened to my grand cherokee, my audi, and it happens from time to time in my rover. i am not saying that your "clunk" is only a driveline lash issue and is normal, or it is the clunk that was listed in the memo and is a problem...but you should know that there is indeed a somewhat normal clunk in systems like the one rover uses.

I would agree with Mike. There is a difference between the spline wear problem and just a normal clunk. I had the problem talked about in the link on my 96 D1 5 speed. It would make a clunk several times when pushing the clutch in while coming to a stop. Also, overrun means that when you take your foot off of the gas then it clunks. If it simply clunks a little when stepping on the gas then I would say that is normal. I would only be concerned if it clunked when taking your foot off the gas.
