Driving around in rover today, and I heard a knocking noise coming from the rear axle. After crawling under the truck, I noticed the Boge self levelling shock was loose on the top joint. I was wandering if it is safe to remove the shock permanently, instead of paying $500+ dollars for a new one? Any info would be great! 88 RR |

You can replace the balls and sockets. Might as well do the A Frame ball joint while you're at it. It makes noise too. I had to do all of the above at 110,000 mi. I had help but it was no biggie. I don't know about loosing the Boge all together. I have new spare balls and sockets if you're interested. Contact me if you are. |

The bottom part of the Boge shock is fine, as well as the A frame ball joint. The problem is the top of the shock where it mounts to the frame. The top joint that connects to the frame is tight, but the top of the shock that connects to the joint is loose causing the top of the shock to knock against the joint. The top clamp that secures a little rubber boot is so rusted that it has made it impossible for me to remove and try to find a way to tighten things up. I really would rather just take the whole unit off, but not sure if doing that will cause other problems. Thanks anyway for the offer! |

no problem. The Discovery has very much the same suspension (as has the Defender)like the RRC has, but they never had the boge unit. The boge unit is designed for the factory set suspension height. Ive been told it cannot work properly in lifted vehicles. The boge unit has one "advantage": it "pressurizes" worn A-frame ball joints so that they make no noise when worn and do not let the driver know they need to be replaced.

Thank you for the information. Now I can finally remove the boge unit permanently. It probably doesn't work anyway because it is lifted 2 inches. Thanks again! |
