Picked up my 91 RR yesterday. OME shocks/springs, poly bushings (uh-oh!) and in good shape (paid $2K). All electrics work (roof, crise, seats, CD changer & all), drives tight, but truck has the usual heater core leak. 1) Can someone provide directions for actually removing the heater core from the heater assembly? Is it hard? My local Rover guy (who's done a few heater assembly swaps) has never tried to remove the core from the assembly, would appreciate some directions/tips. 2) I noticed that the brakes, which work great, are very, very sensitive. I just touch the pedal (seemingly no free play, and surprisingly little pedal travel) and the the truck just stops. Normal? Should I add some free play? 3) Any source for an used/cheap OEM rear light grill? Driver rear side is missing. 4) What body parts are aluminum? I noticed that the bottom of the driver's door has a single rust bubble, and under the hood lip (at the very front) has a small one too. Thought the body panels were aluminum? Love this truck! Just drove it 400 miles at 75mph and it didn't miss a beat. Raagi 1991 RR |

heater core. very informative comments on the rovers north BBS in the past few weeks. goto www.roversnorth.com and you'll find your way. the job is very complicated and time consuming. it's been known to make men cry. brakes, dunno. everyone i talk to usually complain that the breaks are soft. i'm thining you might have an issue or a well maintained truck. light guard, ebay. no vendor sells them as single parts. everything is aluminum except hood and upper/lower tailgate. you can still see white corrosion bubbles from the steel subframe of the doors reacting with the alumiunum. peep www.rangerovers.net tons of data there.

If RRC ABS brakes are functioning properly -they are very sensitive. You'll get used to it and come to like them (I did). They are so sensitive because you are providing very little of the brake force yourself. The truck pressurizes the rear brakes entirely and 50% of the front - you only do 50% of the front with hydraulic force generated by your foot Nice when it all works - downright dangerous when it does not. Again - this is assuming yours is an ABS Rangie (should be unless it is a Hunter version) Bill

Another guy taking the RRC plunge! Sounds like you got a great deal. I personally have turned away from trucks needing a heater core...just too big a job for me, and too much money to have someone else do it. You sir, are braver then I. I think I've found "my" truck... just need to wait until the guy's "new" on arrives from Colorado.

David, I was a little hesitant about getting a truck with a heater core leak. I was a little afraid of the later models with TC & air suspension (I'd toss the air right away), so the earlier models make sense to me. Although, in retrospect, I would've liked a 1992 (with the heated seats/keyless entry... but I can easily add these) The way I see it is eventually they all leak. So I bought one that's already leaking (thereby save some significant $$), and hopefully I'll never have to deal with the problem again. I simply budgeted $1K to deal with the core, and added it to the asking price. Even then, $3K for a RR-which has some nice mods, is a very solid driver(with a new core) and was obviously owned by someone who cared is still a darn good deal, me thinks!

You got a steal. Sounds like the PO put some money into it. Check www.rangerovers.net. Good all around info source including the heater core. I think the heater core was revised later and you may need to look for a superceding part no. |

Definitely sounds sweet and since you've already accounted for the new HC, it's no big. Great find. I've found a well maintained 88 that is in my price range. It's had just about very major component replaced, and the only negative is I'll need to do some welding on the sills.
