Anyone have a shortwave radio in their disco? I am looking for ideas, either in-dash or...? I have an Icom IC-R3 and am still trying to find out how to use it. I would like to hear what any of you are doing. Brendan 97 XD 98 LE |

Brendan, I haven't installed it yet, but I have been looking at the Yaesu FT-100D (http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=102&encProdID=EPH DwnWlx24%3D&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0) and the Icom IC-706MkII(http://www.icomamerica.com/amateur/hf/ic706mkiigmain.html). Both have the ability to do remote head install, which is why I was looking at them. My Amateur license is only a Basic qualification so transmitting on the HF frequencies is a no-no, but having the RX available is handy for SWL and the off chance I'm in the middle of nowhere and someone has a heart attack or a winch cable snaps and a distress call is necessary. Another advantage of the Yaesu is the self-tuning mobile antenna (ATAS-100)that interfaces with only certain Yaesu models and through a hack, the Icom. Yaesu also has a very rugged portable, the FT-817, that has RX/TX from HF to 70cm, but is only 5watts out. With non-remote head rigs I was thinking about mounting it at the back end of the console, between the seats. The rig size is less of an impact there, but being able to control things while driving could be a problem. Leaving the sides of the console, between the seat and the dash. This might impact on the movement of the seat. Victor |
