heres' the scoop i'm going through 6 inches of water and i'm breaking the ice as i'm going through and i turn around and my little brother says Luke go faster and since i had to impress him i do i go throught the same puddle i just went through and plllll my engine cuts out for no good reason (that i know of) now when I get above 2000 rpm my engine sounds like its whining? i pop the hood and i have a small little crack in my left exhaust manifold!! but the mechanic says it sounds like the back bearing in my alternator is going out. does anybody have any input on this for me. this was two weeks ago and i havent had any problems with the battery being drained or anything like that just a constant whining. any input would be helpful. unless your going to tell me not to impress my 9 year old brother who i see like 4 times a year. thank you |

You might have got mud in your idler pulley. If you get mud in the idler pulley it makes a humming noise when you accelerate. I had the same thing happen to me 2 times before I figured it out. (Driving too fast though the mud was the cause.) If its the idler pulley, the pulley will hum like that until the pulley goes and you loose your serpentine belt. (It usually takes about 10,000 miles before the pulley goes, or thats how long it took on both of my pulleys to go after getting mud in them. |

Maybe take the belt off and clean the idler pulley as much as you can? If that's the case you might save yourself grief. That, and don't go through mud puddles at 45 mph!

I never have understood why people floor it thru mud puddles. One of these days there will be a big rock hiding in there and take out your oil pan. |
