Just to cover myself before I plunk down $80 for a new VSS I must ask. Is the speedo jumping around all over the place a sure bet being the VSS? I ran a search but it seems that the VSS symptoms always incorporate bucking, which my truck does not do. Is this just the early stage of a VSS heading south? Is it expected that with time it will start the bucking? Or, is there something else I could be looking at here? TIA |

Brent, Have you recently replaced your serpentine belt? It's possible to install the belt in a way that it "almost" fits, and seems to work, but doesn't provide quite the belt-wrap on the alternator-pulley that it needs. So, you start to have weak-battery symptoms, fluctuating speedo-needle, quirky things. Just check your belt's routing, make sure that it is right.... it's something that can cause this, and it's free to do. If the routing is right, then, it could be the alternator itself, instead of the VSS, but, you'll have different accompanying symptoms.... FWIW.... -L

What other alternator symptoms are there? The serpentine belt was not replaced by me, perhaps the PO a while ago. This problem just started recently. I don't know if it's related, but the 'unlock' flash of the indicators does not take place when I unlock the truck with the remote anymore. It still flashes three times when I lock it though. |
