A lot of people have asked about gas mileage in general - YOU DRIVE A SLOW BRITISH V8 GET OVER IT! However, when I bought my DI 2.5 years ago I calculated my mileage at about 16-18, depending on the gas and the type of driving I was doing. (18 was ONLY on the freeway, and at moderate speeds, but I did get that on some long trips!) Now, I am lucky to get 12 mpg. I know that it will get less as it gets older, but this is a pretty drastic change in the past year. I have put a roof rack on and a lift - but is that really enough to make that big of a change? I thought the new exhaust would help. I thought getting better gas, and additives, etc would help. Is there anything that might be actually going wrong? Or is it just the crappy gas they have out there now, and a 10 year old truck with 117k miles? |

R. B. Bailey, I have a 2001 D2, that had only been getting between 9 and 10 miles per gallon in town and about 11.5 on the freeway. I took the roof rack and lights off, took the MTR's off and switched to A/T's, and took a little of the weight off via under body protection, etc., and my gas mileage jumped up to about 16.3 on the road and around 14 in town. Not bad for only removing the roof rack, lights, some weight and changing tires. |

R.B., Keep in mind also if you switched to bigger tires that they are recording less miles. Which in turn will throw your division off when calculating MPG. -Jim |

Yeah, I have to multiply my miles by 1.08 and then divide by gallons used to get an accurate measurement. Jim, my account registration date changed because I resigned and then asked to be reinstated. Glad you like the tires. Thanks, Greg |

I had a drastic change liek that in my 99 D1 a few months back. At the time I only had an adventure rack and everything else was stock, but i went from 16mpg on the highway to around 10mpg no matter where I drove. Took it to the dealer because the "Check Engine" light kept coming on and they found it needed a valve job. After that it went back up to 16-17 on the highway. Now i have a lift and I'm running 245/75 MTR's and the mileage is around 14 on the highway and 10 in city. Might need to get some Duelers like great for highway driving and put the MTR's on a second set of rims.

Or better yet, just drive it. That's what I do....haen't ever calculated the mileage and I'm MUCH happier that way! Love the truck, that's all that matters! |

Tires, ya, but the new tires have actually corrected my trip meter. It used to be 2.5 mph slow, now it is right on, as checked by time and by multiple GPS units. Besides, larger tires should translate into more mpg's because you are getting more distance per rotation at the same RPM's. The bottom line is that my tank of gas lasts me till 280 miles or so, I could swear it was over 300 when I first bought it. |

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't larger tires require more effort to rotate therefore the engine has to work harder so it doesn't automatically translate into better fuel mileage? This besides the fact that the extra surface area creates more friction with the road which also affects mileage and the increase in height due to the larger tire affects aero dynamics which creates extra drag. If this were true, you'd probably see bus tires on every vehicle right? Just theorizing... |

Yeah, 280 sounds good to me too. Coming back from SAE, I got around 330 miles a leg and would have around 4.5 gallons left in the tank. I was averaging around 16mpg. Some legs would hit high 16, and others would hit high 15. Before the changes, I would get about 200 miles on a tank of gas. Figure that I refill at around 4 or 5 gallons left, that puts me just around 10 mpg. I would get about 230 on the road which would put me around 11.5 or so. On my spedo, per the GPS anyway, I'm showing about 8% slower than I'm actually going. I usually just watch the gps for speed to be safe.

I live less than one block from my office....that counts walking from one end of the campus to the other. Yes it does take more effort to get going, but once you are going you have further travel per rotation of the tire, but the engine is not working harder - I drive 35-40 miles a day for work, so this is important to me. However, if you are doing a lot of stop and go, or towing, ya it will be worse for gas. In other words, you are placing a slightly higher gear on your truck when you put larger tires on. And BTW, I get 280, I pull into a gas station and regularly put 22.3 gallons in!!! Which puts me insanely close to running out of fuel, and at 12.5 mpg. |

I have a 96 d1 5spd with 245/75's and 195k on it. I used to get 240-260 on a tank. During the past 2 months I have replaced my cats and my fuel filter. I am now getting 300-320 miles on a tank. |
