 The smell is distinct as are the web patterns on the tire.  I have a leaking rear wheel seal!  Is the procedure the same as a Disco I?

 I can only assume your axle seals are worn.  Interesting thing is that some folks totally eliminate this seal in order to "bathe" the wheel bearing with 90 wt gear oil.  I wonder if they have the web pattern on the rear tires!

 Appears that there are inner and outer seals.  Might be OK to let the inner go, but the outer (and more expensive one) is probably important!
