Any ideas? All my friends think I'm strange for liking offroading or they like offroading, just in a J##p. So I'm looking for other follow strange offroading rover owners to comiserate with.

I thought I saw on GBR's site that they had a club but I may be wrong. Maybe we ought to start one for the wasatch front although I don't know if there would be enough people to make it worth it. I'm heading down to moab on the 17th with a bunch of people,3 discos and maybe a 90. Drop a line if you want to caravan down with us.

Just tried your email and it didn't let me send one. Let me know more, where are going in moab to wheel? I'd like to meet some rover owners that go off road. We should start a rover club for the Wasatch, there are a lot of cute soccer moms driving rovers out here, maybe we could get them to join ... lol. Your right though, I have noticed there are 2 types of rover owners in Utah, ones that never wave or off road and give me looks like I'm crazy, and the second (very, very few of) that actually use their trucks. Funny thing is I have only ever seen those types down south, never in SLC. Email me at Athoma@forsgren.com
Thanks Andy

Hey Andy (or ErikS) where do you usually go off-roading?

Well I have only lived in Utah for a year and half and I have only owned a Disco since last thanks giving. Before I had a Nissian PU 6cyl 4x4. I drove the PU all over BLM dirt roads in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming to access climbing, and river to kayak. But it was not the greatest for off roading. I bought the disco to get into more wheelin, I have ridden and driven friends J##ps and wanted my own rig. Since owning it I have taken off road around the gooseberry mesa area by Zion NP. Around dirt roads by SLC and Park City, also around Esclante NM and nine mile canyon on some moderate trails . I only lifted it about 3 weeks ago and took it to moab the following week. I drove Klondike Bluffs trail to the horror of my wife. I would like to do more as I learn how to handle the truck. Jeremy, do you live in Utah? What have driven if you do? Any suggestions? I have ridden my Mountain Bike on a lot of the Moab trails and can't wait to get the disco on them.

I live in Utah (the happy valley Provo)I've lived her almost 4 yrs. I'm from Maine.
I've done most of the little hills around here. Done some driving in American Fork Canyon but there's so much more exploring to do.
About a month ago I went to the Big B in Bountiful which was pretty cool. I also checked out Little Moab which was also really cool. I can't wait to check it out again. I found out about the Big B and Little Moab from http://www.geocities.com/wasatchexplorers/
I was going to go to Moab a couple weeks ago to try out Kane Creek but the weather didn't look good...so I haven't been off-roading in Moab yet.
Anyway, if you ever want to go off-roading let me know.

Sounds good, I came from Central PA and I agree about the exploring part, thats why I wanted a disco. Email me, at Athoma@forsgren.com I'd totally be into wheel'in some time. When I went to Moab to a couple of weeks ago I too ran into bad weather. I was afraid to do anything because I didn't want to get stuck in the mud. The last day was perfect dry and clear day, so I drove Klondike Bluffs, loads of fun. Jeremy, do you own a white disco with gray rangie wheels stock lr brushguard with no air dam?

Hello all,

Yes, there is a club in Salt Lake called The Great Basin Land Rover Club. The link from Bill's website just hasn't been updated. We try to get out about once a month. I too was looking a long time for fellow Rover people to go out with and get help with repair stuff. I would still like to hook up for more spur-of-the-moment outings. I go up to Skyline Drive and Logan and the west desert a lot, but usually by myself which limits what I get myself into. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested and I'll get you on the mailing list and we'll hook up. Talk to you soon.

I too, live in happy valley Provo. Jeremy where in provo do you live? Another somewhat local link/site is: rockymountainextreme.com
I haven't seen any talk about rovers on there but if you have a question about any local trails there is most likely someone on there that has ran it.
Andy,
I think we'll be running fins and things, poison spider, golden spike and hells revenge. We may stick to easier stuff though because one of the drivers is somewhat new to off roading.

Fellow Utah Rovers,

Wow – good to see this thread! I live in SLC. There is a Rover club, but from what I hear it is not very active. They do have a few faithful Rovers though. I do know that Bill at GBR has the contact manes and numbers. I also have them somewhere, but cannot locate them at this time. If anything we may want to contact those guys and start meeting with them. Pump some life into it.

Erik, you are going down on the 17th? That is the same weekend that LR Centerville is doing their Rover weekend in Moab. I hear that is a lot of fun, but I have wheeled with those guys and they never seem to do the hard stuff. The events are more tailored for the soccer mom who lets her husband wheel on weekends.

We should set a time next week for any of us in Utah that are reading this to get together for lunch…or a lunchtime trail and get something together. I have been wheeling with the Wasatch Explorers, but those guys drive some pretty beat up rigs and do things to them I just would not do to mine… :)

ha ha that's what I was thinking after looking at their website.
I agree we should all get together!

Don’t take me wrong though. The Explorers were some of the nicest guys I have ever wheeled with. Even though they were all driving beaters, they showed nothing but respect for my Rover. They also managed to make it through the day without major body damage or injuries requiring medical assistance. This was sort of a miracle in itself.

I would not be opposed to getting together with these guys either. Just keep in mind that they really do not mind if they bang up their rigs. Makes me wish I had a beater….

I would like to get in on that rover club action also, I am from Centerville. In fact there is a pretty good road up by the B in Bountiful called the old ward road if anyone is interested in a Saturday morning trail run. Last weekend I just added some spring retainers and shocks so I am ready to go.

Ben,

What time? I might be able to do something if it is early enough. I did that tril last weekend with my son on and ATV and it is clear all the way up to Skyline. Main obstacle is one set of rocks that might be a little challenging, but should be no big deal.

Is the old ward trail the one that has a couple wash outs and a drop off on the right side (when you go up)?

I think so, but that is just the beginning. It comes out at this...well...meadow. Then it continues to climb up to the Buckhorn Flats trail. It intersects with the Skyline road/trail about 5 miles or so up Skyline. It is a much shorter yet slower way to get up there.

BTW - my son & I were coming down Skyline when we saw the aftermath of the J**p that fell 500 feet off Dead Mans curve. I have never seen anything quite like it. It was a mess and truly sad. He did not survive.

wow that's terrible about the accident...

When I went to the Big B we messed around on the hills a little and then I took that trail that goes to that meadow. I didn't go further cuz it was getting dark. It was a cool trail...

What if we were to do it Saturday the 25th in the morning. I still need to install some rear brake lines and make a few tweaks up front. I am also leaving this Saturday on a two week road trip for work, so I cant do it any sooner. Let me know.

Does anyone know if the gate at the top of Skyline has been opened yet? If it is we could do the Old Ward Rd to Buckland flats then continue on Skyline over and down Farmington Canyon. After the Old Ward Rd it is mostly just a dirt road, then at the bottom of Farmington Canyon there are a few cool places. That route might take a little longer.

Ben,

It is not clear that far yet. About three miles past the Ward Road/Skyline intersection (I think it is Frontier Flats?) on Skyline, the road turns into a four foot wall of snow. They are still running snowmobiles up there…or at least they were last weekend. It is not drive-friendly snow either. Very wet, packed, and slippery.

We may be able to get up that high by the 25th though. That date works well for me. If anything we can just do Ward road. I could probably find an excuse to run my ATV up it next weekend and see what it looks like :)

Curtis,

I think we might be changing moab to the week after which is memorial weekend because of a couple of peoples work schedule. I just hope it's not too busy because of the holiday weekend. I think I got the flyer from LR centerville a month or two ago and I think they were going to charge like $3-400 for a 2 day trip. I think I'll save the $300 for mods.

hehe - I don't blame you. My thoughts exactly. Plus, they run pretty easy trails. I don't need to spend $400 bucks just to feel like part of the gang.

Erik, I went down to Moab on memorial day last year. If you want to car camp no problem on BLM, but if you want a Hotel you might already be out of luck. That time frame would work for me and those trails would work, I too am a beginner and would like to build up my skills on those trails, Poison Mesa is nice, I have ridden it on a Mtb but not driven it. I could probably do the Memorial day trip. If you go when would you leave? It looks like an Email group of rover owners in slc area is being set up. We're trying to get a network of owners together. Email me and I can forward the email to the rest of the group if you are interested.
