Howboucha D-Webbers!

I hate to ask this question, but it's been driving me nuts for a few days now.

My XD has the Special Vehicles badging above the grill (inside the doghouse). I understand why it does since it is a limited unit.

Here is what confuses me. My recently purchased 98 LE has one too.
Special Vehicles LE

Something else that I am cornfused about is the production date vs model year. Production date on the tag says 8-1-98 but the Disco is a 98. Is it possible that this is a bs badge?

I ask this because the sales rep (Robert) at Tom Wood in Indy who is said to be very knowledgeable about Land Rovers says that it has to be a fake because the only Special Vehicles machines he has seen through there are the XD and a Calloway Rangie.

So what do you think?
When I purchased my LE it had all of the guards, full rack, ladder, brush guard with winch mount and Warn 9000XDi winch. As I mentioned in a earlier post, it appeared to have never been used off road. I have no history on this vehicle because I purchased it from a wholesale dealer who bought it from a repo auction.

Any insight would be tremendously appreciated so I can sleep.

Brendan

There are special vehicles other than the XD and the Callaway but I don't know abaout a 98 DI. There is the LSE but you said it was a LE. And I don't know if the LSE has a badge. Interesting.

I'd check with LR back in the UK quoting the contract number, vin and build date....

It could have been a trial vehicle for a 1999D1

I wonder what would happen if you dialed up the Special Vehicles phone number that is listed on that badge?

And yes, my Rover is special too, but not as special as it would be if it were painted... school bus yellow...

Brendan, I wonder if the vehicles with the extra goodies (brush guards, driving lights etc) get the special vehicle badge? FWIW my wife's '97 RR 4.6 HSE has the badge, it is a Panther Edition. Hers has the brush guards two driving lights mounted to the front brush guard and nifty little black panther embroidered on the two front seats.

Hi
It is my understanding that they were put through SV if anything is added that is not standard, this could be something as mundane as an interior light or as tricky as a completely bulletproof defender, the badge is a record of it being a factory mod, SV will tackle anything if the customer has enough money, all the utility defenders go through and they all have stuff like roller shutter side lockers cut in, wide flotation tyres, roof racks etc.
It might be something as daft as a sat/nav system. It really is just a factory approved workshop for all the different roles LR`s are asked to perform.
If you are seeking parts for an SV vehicle you will need that contract number.

Pete
