Last week I had 2 experiences of my truck deciding it was going to try to drive off when I was out of it - thankfully, each time I got in it fast enough to avoid catastrophe. Each time that occured, I was in neutral with the parking brake on level ground of slippery mud surface.

I don't think I want to do that anymore - even though I know that is the recommended gear/brake position when stopped on the trail so that rover does not get stuck in "park" if fuse gets wet or blows.

Since I am probably going to opt to stay in "park" instead of neutral, I think I had better learn the procedure for "hot-wiring" the gears to get it out of park if that happens to me. I think it involves rerouting the tail light wires to the gear shifter?

Has anyone had occassion to employ this "hot-wiring" method on the trail?

Thanks in advance, Jamie

Just keep a spair switch with you, easy to change.
I've been stuck in my own driveway a few weeks after buying this truck.
Dealer sells them for $50. Just look up the brake pedal shaft there are two switches it is the lower one. In a pinch you can pull the switch of its mount if the plunger does not pop out just unplug it. The decortive trim if removed would make access a lot easer.
The other route you are inquiring about has been discused her before. not sure if it will work for a D2. Is there not a button on the shifter housing with a button to override the loch out?

This switch was $27 from Disco Tech Industries
PN AMR2010 for a 97 disco.

Thanks Stuart,

I will check into that for sure, sounds like a great solution. I don't trust my truck anymore in neutral with parking brake on. Especially on slick mud surfaces. I couldn't believe it when my truck started moving while on level ground. A few more seconds and my truck would have pinned a young man we had recovered between my truck and his. Really shook me up.

Thanks again, Jamie

If I needed to get out of park I would just remove the center console and remove the lock solinoid. Its a pretty quick job...the console is real easy to remove.

This is a copy n paste from atlantic british:

Can't shift out of park - Troubleshooting
Vehicle - Land Rover Discovery and 1995 Range Rover Classic
Check to see if you have stoplights. No lights check:
a. Fuse f1 in the fascia fuse box ok? (Discovery, if the fuse the blows check the terminals on the back window grids making sure they are not touching each other causing a short. They get bent easily)
b. Inspect the brake light switch on the brake pedal (The brake light switch has four wires on it and the cruise switch has two wires and a vacuum line on it).
If switch is intact:
a. Jump the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire; the brake lights should come on enabling the shift out of park.
b. Caution! The brake lights will be on all the time. Have problem repaired as soon as possible. Also you may get an ABS fault stored.
If you have stoplights pop the top of the shift lever off and check to see if the clip on the button is intact. They have been known to come off and not lift the rod in the handle.
1992-1994 Range Rover Classic:
Same as above except: Dash fuse box fuse# B1 and jump wires: white/purple and green/purple at brake light switch #AMR2010G.

I am printing your post and putting it in the owner's manual binder in my truck! :-)
