Living in Norway prices for used vehicles are somewhat different to the US, BUT Is it worth forking out extra for a 2000 DiscoII (approx $9000) compared to a 1998 DiscoI . Both are V8, DII has 92K KM DiscoI has 102K Km. Standard of equipment is the same, leather, aircon, etc, etc BUT $9000 buys a lot of extra kit? suggestions anyone. Remember that the price difference I consider cheap for Norway, equivalent Td5`s are more expensive. It will be offroaded... |

If the D2 has ACE, this is good for off roading as its like having a self dislocating roll bar fitted (It dissengauges at low speeds in low) and improves the road behaviour a lot D2 build quality seems higher Here is the big question, does the D2 have a CDL spine on the transfer box. If not it will be a pain to get CDL working. D1 has CDL standard |

ACE adds unnecessary complication to a vehicle. Go for the D1. |

Chris, please explain? As my 2000 has the ACE and I love it! Handles better on and off-road. Never had a problem with it and she has 65,000 miles. Many of the off-road driven hard. www.roverdude.com |

$9000USD? For that kind of cabbage, the D1 has GOT to be the way to go, _especially_ if the D2 has ACE. -Mike '99 D2 w/ACE |

Hi, My personal experience is with a '98 discovery and has been great. I like to think that the ownership by BMW in 1998 might have something to do with the lack of problems compared to what I have seen in earlier model years ;-). Having discussed this issue with a few of the other, more experienced, members of my LR club the feeling have been unanimous: those that have owned both preferred the D1. Simplicity is frequently listed as a major factor. Also mentioned is the mechanical Centre Differential Lock. When combined with a Detroit, or Air, Locker in the back and a Truetrack in the front it is unstopable. Additionally, because there was so much overlap with the Range Rover Classic and Defender, there are quite a few sources for parts. When I was at the dealer buying mine I had a choice of a '98 D1 or a '99 D2. I have no regrets in buying the D1. I think you're right: take the 9000USD and put it into tyres, lockers and a long expedition to some place interesting. The value in a D1 right now is outstanding. One caviat: given the milage on the D1, I would check the service history, as well as the valley gasket. At that point the gasket might leak coolant or oil. This isn't merely something that affects D1s, it hits all V8s and could mean some work right out of the gate. The second thing is the CDL lever. This does only affect D1s. If it hasn't been driven off road then it may be seized or able to only switch to 4L. Make sure it will go to the side too, so the Diff lock can engage. Victor |

D1's rule... shorter and less gadgetry for the dirty boys.. The more initials (ABS, SLS, ACE, ETC) the scarier for me!!.. Although if I had it my way I'd lift a 2003 Range 4 inches and throw some 33's under it ... My 95 D1 has 250,000 on her and never had to replace anything but the brake pedal switch! (besides the regular... brake pads, tune ups, exhaust and tires! I will be collecting 95 D1's for the rest of my life... I'm too afraid to buy a new truck with less miles as It will probably stab me in the back!! IMHO - If your a do it yourself kinda guy, and you like to get the truck dirty ... go for a D1. If you need the truck for ski trips or camping at national parks and your fundage will allow the spendage go for the D2 .. but I might call you a girl then!! hahaha |
