I am thinking of adding a det./ tru tac setp up to my 98' Disco. Also I want to add 4.10 gears. The problem is no one around here (greenville sc) is familiar with rovers and are charging me an arm and a leg to do the 3rd member set up (lockers & gears). I feel I can take off the 3rd members send them off and reinstall the rebuilt ones and new axles if I can get some to do the rest. Has anyone done this? Any suggestion would be great.

Perry: Great Basin Rovers will hook you up. All you have to do is remove your 3rd member, pack it in a 5 gallon bucket and send it to them. They will set everything up and ship it back to you and BAM all you have to do is stick back in pumpkin!

Perry - i am in process of doing that for my 94. Setting up ARB and 4.70 gears. Its pretty easy, if you got strong arms (as air tools bad idea for this) and do not afraid of taking things apart.

Only thing to be careful about is when you settin g up backslash, but you can find great article on d-90.com on how to sort that out.

Everything else so far is not hard at all. It just takes some time. Altough my local 4x4 shop wanted to make it 400/differential, but then i figured - hell, if something breaks on trail i would much rather know how to do it myself :-) In other words - go for it. Buy parts and have fun working on your own truck.

I guess I'm a little gun shy because I had a local guy regear a Blazer and after taking it back twice and a lot of heartache it never was right again. But I don't mind doing the work if I feel I'm up for it. I'll check out the D-90 site. Thanks all.

I sent my rear to GBR for a DL. Came back in a couple weeks and was perfect. I'd just do the front and rear one at a time, rear first.

"Only thing to be careful about is when you settin g up backslash"

i'm thinkin' you've never done this before either!
please don't give advice on things you've never done.

perry, call Bill @ GBR and he'll help you with what you need and he'll set up everything you need to drop right in. if you want to try yourself, email me, i'll walk you through the process. it really is nothing to be afraid of. especially with a DT/TT setup.

good luck

Marc, correct, i never done it before. I just done some research and then went for it. Just finished installation last night and it seems to be working quite well. So whats your point?

his point is you still have no idea if it is correct.

is the pinion depth correct?

is the mesh pattern correct?

a good set up job will last a long time

a marginal one may last 50% that time

a crappy one might become noisy in a thousand miles.

I have done a number of gear sets for myself. I have all the Dana specific tools such as a pinion depth gauge and a case spreader. but I still get weak kneed when I have to promise a friend its perfect.

telling someone to watch a video or read a article and then dive right in is just stupid, I watched a master a dozen times before I tried my first set alone, then had him check the pattern before I ran the gearset.

saying you want to do your own so you can service them on the trail is pretty lame as well. nobody does gear work on the trail.

"yea Bob you have a spare set of reverse cut 4:10's in your tool box I just broke mine" :-)

Well, half the fun of this, for me, is DIY...so what, you screw up something - you learn. (yeah, yeah, it's just money)

I'm getting ready to undertake this very job. There's a really well detailed article in the tech section over on d90.com on installing the lockers.

Does anyone have any links to ring & pinion replacement? Something with nice glossy pics would rock.

thanks Thom, i couldn't have said it better myself. i guess next he'll be telling us that he used his stock height shims on his 4.10 gears and threw a perfect pattern!?
ok sergei, i'll back off, but just be mindful that there are instances where experience speaks volumes over what one would read on the internet.
and be careful, those who know, know your blowin' smoke.

jay check the randys ring and pinion site, from time to time they post tech setups etc... nothing for rovers though. most drop out center carriers (ie toyota, ford 9", are similar but each have their own little differences) find an article on a drop out carrier and that will give you a general idea. in the end, a lot of it is repetition and feel. unfortunately, that can't be learned on the net from "nice glossy pics".
i may have pattern pictures if thats what your looking for, but a general tech i'd do a google search.
