Today I installed an "on-board" air compressor in my XD. I used a leveling compressor from a Buick Park Avenue. It works pretty good and I am particularly happy about the install. If you want to see what I did go to: http://www.redbirdsra.com/techtipscompressor.htm There are a few touch up items that I need to do like get a good waterproof switch and I need to cover the connector valve. Enjoy, Brendan 97 XD 98 LE Something |

Thanks guys! The bottle jack and chock will be placed in the storage box that I built today. Here is shot of what I started with: I was going to build one from scratch, but found this "blem" cabinent at a local home improvement store for $29.00. Today I modified it so it is safe and added a few shelves and made the top nicer. I will eventually order a "real box" when I can find a source in the US that sells a quality unit for a reasonable price. Any suggestions? I have had a few questions regarding the max psi, what the part number is, how long it takes to fill a tire and will it run air tools. I have been told max psi is about 100. This particular compressor will shut off on it's own if too much pressure builds up. The compressor is found on many of GM's higher-end vehicles. You are more apt to find it at a auto salvage yard that specializes in american machines. Since there is no storage tank, it is a poor unit to run air tools at any speed. I will do a flat tire test soon and let you know how fast it airs a tire up. Off to do suspension research. Brendan 97 XD 98 LE? |

There is a guy selling a similar unit on ebay, and seems to be marketing it to off-road people. I think $75.00 is very steep. Don't pay any more than $50.00 for one or you getting ripped. Allow about $20.00 for the other parts you will need. Here is the ebay link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46104&item=244 5539884 Do a search on "suspension compressors" too. Brendan |

run it to a 4" by 14" schedule 80 PVC pipe capped on each end as a tank. a square D $12 presure switch and you should be able to run ARB's just fine. But I'd move that coupler some where else or it will get mangled and contaminated. Cool pump |

If that compressor has the plastic piston, make sure you open it up and oil it, and be careful of using it for prolonged periods. A lot of guys used GM suspension compressors and found the pistons melted when the compressor ran for more than 10 mins or so. joe |

Has anybody had better luck with a Ford/Lincoln compressor or any other brand??? I am pretty hot on this idea. I am going to use my sliders for a pair of air tanks.....Dave |

A Rangie with EAS setup also has a compressor and tank. Could be another option. http://www.longrun.com/forsale/rrovair/rrovair.htm |

I used an air compressor from a Range Rover with EAS and two EAS air tanks. The compressor is mounted under the passenger's floor above the rear axle and the air tanks are mounted to brackets outside the frame rails, under the floors. This is on a Disco I. I have fitted stainless quick connects, one at one tank, with a flexioble shop air hose routed to the front near the winch. My theory was that if the rubber shop line ever had a failure, I could disconnect it at the tank, and fit my coil hose right at the air tank. The system generates about 150 psi and 20 liters of air. Inflates two tires instantly, but than takes a long time to recover. The compressor was used, after all! I also have 15lbs of CO2 on board. I think I still have some of the reservoirs laying around, if anybody would like to build their own. On the XD, I would be worried about the vulnerability of the the connector on the bumper! |

Nice job I put an onboard air system on my 200Tdi Disco, I couldnt find the type of compressor you used so I used an air con compressor from an old Range Rover, and got a tank from www.onboardair.com at a reasonable price. The system works great and pumps well over 10 bar. wizard |
