I've been considering getting some sand ladders, problem is I'm not quite sure what types of situations they are beneficial for. If anyone has any input or advice please chime in.

thanks

I always say if you dont know how or why to use a tool why own it?

they provide extra traction through something you know you are going to have trouble with...
they are usually used in quantities greater than one pair...
they aren't so helpful in getting you out once your stuck... unless the route to safety requires them...
sand, mud, almost any ground type can be made easier with this tool...

Reid,
You can also use them as bridges over small obstacles, and like sand and mud, they are great for getting out of, or over, a snow bank.

The Camel Trophy videos seem to provide a million ideas.

And yes, they look cool too.

Musky-

They not only look super cool on the roof rack, they work like large vertical stabelizers and keep the truck tracking straight a freeway speeds.

Victor-

It depends on what you are calling a sand ladder. If it is the perforated aluminum plate, they make real lousy bridges. I don't think the steel plate is really much better. The "ladders: used in the Camel trophy are specially designed for bridging and can hold the weight of a Rover.

Jess-

The perforated plate kind also do not add a whole lot of traction as they can be real slippery.

What they do real well in snow, sand, and mud, is to disperse the weight of the vehicle so it will better float on the surface, instead of sinking.

These are just personal observations. I have used the sand tracks a lot, but I would rather have a set of bridging ladders.
