Would be interested in advice and counsel on replacing the brake pads on a 1999 Discovery 2 with 53k miles. I am a good shade-tree mechanic and have undertaken same on BMW, Peugeots and Dodges. Anything unusual about the Discovery? Anything in particular to look for? Any LR-specific tools suggested? Thanks in Advance!! |

If you've done Brakes on a Peugot and a Dodge - these will be a breeze. I have a land rover specific pipe wrench that I use for pushing the caliper pistons in |

Just did my fronts (pads and rotors) on my 2000 Disco II this weekend. Took about 1.5 hours. Interesting to note that 20 minutes of that was spent getting the lug nuts off, which resulted in a bit lug wrench and a hernia - even with a long extension for leverage. In any case, nothing fancy needed for the pads, just c-clamps and wrenches. The rotors were a bit more cumbersome, needed a 12-point socket (or wrench) and a lot of grief to get the retaining screws (1 on each rotor) off. It's a #4 pozi insert on an impact wrench, or a nice hammer and chisel when that fails miserably. Also needed a 3 lb sledge to get the rotors off. In any case, have new cross-drilled / slotted rotors and ferodo pads and a truck that stops on a dime (okay, a really big dime). No problems at all on doing this. For pads only, follow this: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/disco2brakes/ |

I can do all four corners w/new pads on my disco in about 45mins to a hour tops . All you need is a small pliers, thin punch, vise grip and a small pry bar.combined with the bottle jack its a snap. the trick is in doing one pad at a time, that way you never fight recompressing the pistons into the caliper. |
