Anyone rebuild their starter motor? I have a 97 Disco that when you turn the key, the starter turns but won't engage the flywheel. I have it out of the truck now, anyone have any words of wisdom?

I had mine rebuilt about 6 months ago. It cost me $75 dollars and I've had no problems since.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the starter? Mine has a metal BOX around it that I can't seem to find the bolts to take it off!!! Thanks!

Also, my 95 is being tempermental and doesn't start every 1/50 cranks. Turn the key and all power is there but just a 'click' noise. Do I need a new starter?!

If you have an Autozone near you, go there. They have a rebuilt one with a lifetime guarantee for $150.00 . If it ever breaks, they'll give you another for free. I have had mine for 2 years and no problems. It's worth the hassle, and easy to install if you dont mind getting your hands dirty.

I "don't mind getting my hands dirty" at all, but my question is HOW do I do the removal/install? Did you do your own Glen?

If I remember correctly there are only 2 allen head bolts (5/16 or 8mm) that hold the starter on. You may have to get the heat shield off first and that is bolted to the rear exhaust manifold bolts.
If this doesn't clear anything up email me directly and I can fax you some workshop manual pages.

Susannah-

The "metal box" is a heat shield. It's very simple to unfasten and a pain to get out. The front of the sheild(towards the front of your truck) is held by a small bolt at the motor mount. The back has a bracket that just wraps around the starter solenoid. The pain is wrestling around with that shield when you are taking the starter off, and manuevering it around out of the way. The starter is very simple to replace, two hex head bolts, one on the top and one on the bottom, then the hot lead from the battery and the ignition switch lead. Should only take about a half hour to remove.

Thanks Brent and Chip for the information!!
I'm getting a workshop manual for christmas...it's about that time!

I went in and adjusted the connection on the starter thinking all the mud I had managed to 'deposit' in there was causing the problem, however I'm still getting faulty starts. No grinding noises, etc...just a click and full power. I may have AutoZone do a check to make sure it needs to be replaced, and then I have a guy who can rebuild it for me fairly cheaply...just have to get the old one off!

I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again,
S

I had faulty starts and all along it was the teeth on the starter. Just hope that the teeth on the flywheel are not shattered. Usually does not happen but you never know. I replaced my own starter on my 95 Disco and it took me about an hour and a half. It was a pain because there are a few things in the way that jam it's easy extraction. However, it's common sense. I found that pulling it out from the top was much much easier once you have all the bolts and wires free.

Thanks Glen! I'm hoping it's just a connection problem, honestly. Did your starter make noise or was it just a click from the ignition? With longer arms, I could have better access from above...I got underneath a while back and cleaned up the connection from the ignition lead (mud) but it seems not to have solved my problem...

Hey Glen, did you just ask for a starter for a Disco at Autozone, or do you have to ask for a different type of car? btw, is there a part number or anything? TIA

Ok, went to Autozone and had the battery checked. No problem there. The guy said from what it's doing, he doesn't think it's my starter, just the connection. Many other people have said the same thing....so...can I replace the ignition lead wire set myself? Is that something I should venture to do or just give in and take her to a dealer?!

You can replace the postive cable (Batt to starter) yourself. If your not concerned with aesthetics under the hood, you need to use a marine terminal because you need to hook up the fuse box to the new terminal as well. Best to solder connections to get good contacts. AB has proper cables etc for about 25ea. If your puzzled to what I've said, drop me a line.
