I have an '00 Disco, purchased second hand last winter. It's been trouble free for me, and it has a clean service record. It'll be out of warranty in a few months, and I'll soon have to decide whether to buy the extended warranty for it. I'm of two minds. On one hand, it runs like a champ and I could handle the occasional unplanned costly repair. On the other hand, I've heard they're expensive to fix when big stuff starts to go, and that the warranty - despite its price - will pay for itself.

What does the voice of experience say?

Thanks,
Bruce.

I have a 98 disco and I purchased the extended warranty to 100k for $2500, which I thought was a lot of coin.....and the thing was running good...... But, I got rebuilt engine at 94K which they said cost $8k to do. Also a fuel pump shortly after that, I don't remember what that cost but it wasn't cheap. Oh yeah, I got a Alternator some time in there too........ so it worked out for me.

8k to rebuild the 4.0 engine...call me crazy, but for that much money you could have installed 3 4.6 engines or 2 5.2 engines....or 1 very crazy horsepower motor.

Well here's the latest info I can give you. I have a 2000 DII, TGM front bumper w/warn 9000lbs winch, snorkel, fat man rear bumper, EE 3" lift, Hellroaring isolator w/dual Optimas, CDL lever...I'm in for service right now at 30,000. Had my wife ask about extended warranty. Dealer says dont't bother...with the modifications done an extended warranty will not cover drive train or engine (half expected that). Should mention that on this visit the dealer did replace, throttle body, MAF, Driver seat (cracked/splitting leather), and both horns. All covered under warranty, thank god. From the sounds of it though, extended warranties don't cover like the original, especially when you throw mods into the mix. Might be something to consider, especially if you plan on enjoying your Rover in those ways. Might be better off to save the 3K for additional mods. Good Luck!

Reid,
Two quick points. There is nothing that you modified that should change the warranty on your vehicle. The dealership is full of it or not a regular LR Center. Also, I purchased my extended warranty and hated shelling out the green for it but I found out today after two radiator replacements and another coolant leak that it is the cylinder head gasket and a sticking valve problem on top of it. Gonna cost over $2000 and I only have to pay the $100 deductible. It pays for itself with one major rebuild etc. Good luck. My Center is very comfortable with me doing mods within reason. changing gearing, computer stuff etc. and major mechanical stuff and the warranty COULD be void but not necessarily.
