I recently purchased a set of new Goodyear MTR's to go with my new lift, the tires are great. As soon as I had them installed, I took my rig to the dealer to make sure it was aligned perfectly. I did this to avoid wearing the tires unevenly, an issue I did not want to encounter after spending $1000 on tires. The dealer assured me and even took me into the bay and showed me that they were within spec.

After about 4K miles on the tires, the front tires are starting to wear uneven. The very center edges of the tread blocks are high and low.

Anyone here have any suggestions about this? Does this sound like an alignment issue, inflation, etc...

Thanks DWEB! & Jim for posting in the classified section where I mistakenly listed this.

Todd,

Castor and camber are fixed on Discos, you can only adjust toe. Well, air pressure, too, can be adjusted :-) Anyway, try frequently rotating your tires. Just make sure that you adjust the pressures accordingly so that the rear tires are higher than the fronts....

FWIW....

Todd,

My MTR's have 20K on them now and they are starting to cup like no tomorrow. I rebalanced all the tires and the rears are really starting to wear unevenly. For this reason, I am looking into buying two sets of tires / rims. One set for everyday (Bridgestone Dueler AT) and a new set of MTR's for off roading.

Mine cup too eventually, solid axles are tough on front tires. Good shocks, bushings, and properly adjusted wheel bearings help.

My BFG's are cupping terribly right now, and everyone is telling me to replace the shocks. ???

Good info. I have new OME HD springs and Bilstein shocks. All of this was put on at the same time.

Based on your feedback, my next dilema is if I keep rotating, I will eventually "CUP" all 4 tires. Would it not be better to just leave the 2 front tires there and only ruin them?

I guess the best solution is 2 sets of tires and rims!

Thanks for the feedback!

Well, shocks and springs are not an issue on my end. Mine are roughly 3 months old; 3" OME set up that is.

Ho, it might be a Goodyear thing. I remember you questioning my purchase decision last year....so who knows what I'll do. I have 2 brand new MTR's already so I'll probably buy three more and abuse another set.

That's odd.My MTR's never cupped. Maybe you guys just drive on pavement too much? :-)

Unfortunately James is right, just not enough dirt time to keep them happy!

This is the first set of tires I have purchased that are not BFG's. I thought I would try something new, and so far I am not too impressed with the MTR's.

Lessons learned!

Todd, FYI - I've finally used these XPCs, and the tire shop guy shook his head and said that they were so cupped that they could cause vibration and noise. I didn't notice any vibration or noise, and the wear pattern was more or less the same as on my Disco.

The rangie seems to be wearing tires very evenly, so it may indeed be some wheel angles-related issue.

I admit I don't know everything about chassis dynamics, but how can the Jeep Rubicon come with MTR's and solid axles and not have these issues?

Surely there must be something else to it than "well, Goodyears suck" ?

Shawn, how do you know that Jeep Rubicon doesn't have these issues?

I've seen plenty of MTR's with over 30k on them and no cupping...including my own. The problem must lie elsewhere. Balancing, bearings or something.

I'm on my second set of MTR's and I got 55 K miles on the first set. Keep in mind these are compromise tires for the street and if you drive lots of stop & go and are heavy on the brakes, the lugs flex under braking and will feather the center lugs. I drive mostly higway back and forth to work, 20K miles per year with 40 PSI front & rear and they wear very even but, if I do alot of city driving and brake heavy, they start to feather. I rotate so that I change the direction of rotation and they even out. Be aware that at around 50K miles they start to wear funny no mater what you do and get really noisy. Brake early and easy, run 40 PSI front & Rear on the street and they will last you a long time.

I could only get 30K miles on my BFG's and they feathered the same way but, didn't do the trade mark goodyear funny wear patterns on the last 5000 usable miles.

Thanks Gabriel,

FWIW, I drive a total of 10 miles to work and back. The only time my MTR's get over 55 mph is when I head off on a weekend trip. I'll check pressures this afternoon.

Could the wearing/cupping of GY tires have anything to do with the way weight is distributed in LR's??

Just a thought.

Good suggestions, I am going to check air pressure. I drive mostly stop and go to and from work, no hwy driving. Maybe that is the issue.

Peter, I don't think those XPC's were cupped, they never made any noise or gave any vibrations on my rig???
