Need to replace a bent track rod on a 97 D1, but before I do would like to get some info on the steering dampener. First is can the dampener be reused or is it necessary to replace it with a new one? Second is there anything I need to know when one is taken off such as is it under pressure and any tricks to take it off and to put it back. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Brian |

It can be reused if it's not leaking or otherwise damaged. It's not under any pressure, just remove the nuts from both ends and compress it with your hands. It's called a damper unless you're trying to moisten something with it SC |

Check into moving it up to the front if you are going through that effort. Kits are available: www.rovertym.com www.rockware.net www.safarigard.com |

Clif, this is interesting. What's involved in the relocation? |

Thanks. Relocation is on the list, just want to get on the road again. Another option is a track rod protector from Scorpion Racing, which I think also protects the damper.

I am not familiar with the Scorpion Racing piece. It sounds as though it would be adequate. Your ideal set up involves protecting that rod somehow or replacing it with the thicker, high-clearance Rockware model and moving the damper up front. |
