Ok, so I wake up today and go to open the Rear cargo door on my 98 disco and guess what. It doesnt want to open. The handle (Inside or outside handles. I tried both.) doesnt seem to work. Then After much f**k'n with it I get it open and take off the door panel. And cant seem to find the problem. Because its not the linkage like i thought. So off the the dealer I go. Now they tell me its $168 for a new latch and $385 in labor and thats only if they can get the door back open and dont have to use a crow bar and break it open because if that happens then they have to send it to the body shop to fix the damage and that will cost alot more. So DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS, OPTIONS, RUN INTO THIS BEFORE???

This happened to me before. What I found is that if from the inside, if you hold the door lock in the upright position, you can open the door with the handle. In my case, a spring broke in the door latch mechanism that prevented the door lock from being pushed all the way up. I ordered a new one from Rovers North and installed it my self at a much better price than what the dealer wanted for the part. It took about an hour start to finish.

Good grief.....(not again!)
Get a flat screwdriver and PB blaster/WD 40 type spray. Remove land rover logo from the rear door handle. Spray heavily.
Now use the screwdriver from below to release the part of the handle (triangular shaped metal) you touch by pulling it backwards gently.
This will release the handle. Open/close it a few times, spray again, remove excess spray.
Suggest you repeat in 24-48 hours to really clean it out.
Repeat every 3-4 months and no problem again

Chris

The handles work. IE they will both pull fine. The problem is that the latch isnt disengaging when you pull the handles (inside or outside). Is this advice for getting the latch to release or the door handles to release? With two people I can get the door partly open. But not all the way. This envolves one person trying the outside handle while the person insdie trys the inside handle and holds the lock all the way up. Anyway, I will give your advice a shot today after I wake up.
