Im planning a trip to vegas for a 3 day weekend. Unfortunately due to time constraints i will be unable to drive my disco out there but would love to hit some trials. Does anyone know of a place that i can possible rent a rig, or a "tour" i can take? i will be with a couple of my cousins also who have not been off-roading yet.

Rick, Hertz usually has some D2s at the McCarran Airport (vegas airport).

I went to vegas a few years back. Our group rented a few wranglers right on the strip and checked out few a places. Red Rock Canyon is pretty close and had a trail that leads up the mountain. It's a nice trail that stock trucks can do (10 miles long? can't remember) but we ended up turning around at the end due to big rocks and the risk of breakage and getting stuck (It was my first time driving on rocks and not a good time/place to test my skill). Nice place for pictures though. We also went to Valley of Fire, Mt Charleston, Black Mountain and a few other senic areas. Check with the rangers and they will give you maps of the area and the trails. Bring lots of water and check the rental vehicle top to bottom to make sure everything looks good and works good before you go out. One of the XJs we rented on a prior trip over heated on the strip, a Montero we rented over heated a transmission, and the rental TJ broke second gear snychro (it was bad already but let go while trying to visit the Hoover Dam. Needless to say driving the hilly roads on the way up was a pain without second gear). Have fun and be safe.

Here's a couple of tours I see on the strip...

Pink Jeep Tours use jeeps and suburbans, while Rebel Tours use Hummers.

There is a place that rents Jeeps, Hummers and some other SUVs, www.dreamcarrentals.com
They have rates on the website. I have never done business with them, or know anyone who has, so I can't tell you any more.

I like the Red Rock trail that Mark posted for short trips. You can do the trail in 3 hours including round trip from the Strip. There are also plenty more trails and dirt roads in that area if you want to spend more time out there.

E-mail me if you need any more trail ideas.

Rick, you say you want to 'hit some trials'?

Getting out of Vegas with the shirt on your back will be your first trial.

If you want to go have some fun off-road for a day call the hummer guys. They will take you out to the desert and go as fast as you can stand.

If you're ever in the area and want to take a longer trip and get waaayyyy out in the middle of nowhere, give me a jingle.

Check out my site to see what I'm offering here in Vegas (no local tours though, sorry).

Thanks guys.
Ive survived casinos in europe, the bahamas, and AC but dont tell them. As well as a hold 'em tournament in Staten Island and overall i think im up. but maybe i just dont remember the times i lose. What might kill me in vegas is the endless supply of debauchery. The hummer and jeep tours soung great but i want to drive. Red Rock sounds like what im looking for, i'll see if my cousins are up for that.
thanks again

There is a new outfit in Boulder City that uses Pinz's for tours. I met the guy at Bill Burke's Anza Borrego outing getting some training from BB.

Jeez, there seem to be a few of us LV'rs on the board - how about a new thread listing our favorite day trips (or 1/2 day trips) like:

Up and over the Sheep Mtns, returning on 93 to I15.

'Old Potato Road' (over the Spring Mtns. at the far side of the Red Rock loop, down into Lovell Canyon, out to Parumph Highway and home (stopping for beers at Mtn. Springs)

Old mining areas all around Goodsprings / Sandy Valley.

Out to Cold Creek, up and over down into Parumph.

What am I missing?

Ugh, I wouldn't want to ride in a Pinz, even for a half-day tour. Other than novelty value, they just don't appeal that much to me (and I have some buddies with some tricked out Pinzie's).

I did a really fun half-day trip with the rockcrawling team from ProComp just after SEMA. You can see the pics on my site here:

http://tawayama.com/safaris/recent%20trips/teamprocomp/teamprocomp.html

A loop I've wanted to do is behind Gass peak in the Desert Wildlife Refuge, heading out I95, going in at the Ranger station, taking Mormon Well Road around the back side and ending up coming out at I93. Could be a fun day or half-day trip depending on how fast you wanted to go. I've wanted to see if we can get up on top where the radio towers are from the backside and camp up there.

I haven't done any of the loops you describe, but there are a lot of neat areas in the LV Wash to play in just North of my house (Farm/Decateur).

I just ran up to the top of Mt. Charleston and back tonight with my ChuckWagon trailer. I had the radiator in my LWB rodded out and wanted to give it a stress test. It passed with flying colors.

Gimme a call or an e-mail sometime and we can go explore!

:-)
