I've got a 99 D2 and it pings when the engine is hot and I am accelerating up a hill. I run premium but at my altitude (4500') all I can find is 91 octane. I've had the engine MotorVac'd to clean out any carbon buildup and run with factory plugs. I've even tried several treatments of Seafoam both in the tank and through a vaccum line but with no reduction in pinging. I also switched to a K&N filter in hopes of reducing the pinging but no dice. Is there something else I should be looking at? Is there a differnt ECU program the dealer can install for vehicles which operate at higher altitudes. Would this even make a difference? |

Craig, Have you tried an off the shelf octane boast just to see if that eliminates the problem? I'm not sure where you are located, but I think Sunoco offers a 93 octane, maybe higher in some spots. |

I heard each quart adds about 1/2 point. So you'll have to add a few bottles to get your octane up there. |

TRY LUCAS FUEL STABILIZER (TUNE UP IN A BOTTLE). USED IT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS NOW. PURRRS LIKE A CAT AND ELIMINATES THE PING WHILE ENGINE IS ON STRESS. |

I had a pinging when at idle and low RPMs. Turns out the cats were bad. I have a 97 disco se7 with 60,000 miles. Tokk it to the LR dealer and found out it was actually covered under an 8 year 80,000 mile warranty. Had them replace it today and it has never run better. |

If you want to boost Octane use TOLULENE. Its Paint remover so be VERY careful when putting it in. You can run a very stiff mixture if you want but start off with maybe a Gallon to a tank of Gas. If your wondering why, I can send links to sites that document it but basically, in the 80's when Formula 1 was running High boost Turbocharged cars with over 1000hp they ran a VERY STIFF mixture of Tolulene to keep pinging in check. OUr cars would likely not even RUN with that mixture (about 50/50%) But we use it in our Audi's at track days to get more power out of the cars. With some Tolulene in the tank our motors dont need to retard the timing to reduce knock and we get engines with MUCH more power. The stuf works WAY better than any off the shelf Octane booster with whihc your Lucky to get a 1/2pt boost. With Tolulene (nicknamed Rocket Fuel when mixed) you can easily get upwards of 95 octane out of your 92 octane fuel. Might be worth a try at least to see if it helps but obviously you have a problem elsewhere that needs fixing. Good Luck Todd l8r Todd |

what is pinging mechanically? what makes the noise? Is it the valves shaking around in the heads? |

Pinging is caused by abnormal combustion in the combustion chamber. (Which is caused by abnormal detonation -> fuel/air mixture.) Tolulene is what they used back in the days for raising the octane level in gasoline. Be careful when mixing. Too lean of a mixture will cause your truck to explode. |

too lean and the piston will melt...if the pistons have a bit too much carbon on the tops you will get more than one explosion, thats what you hear. |
